I had AOL for a couple weeks because I needed to connect internationally and they claimed to have an 800 number that worked. They were wrong and after 15 minutes on the phone arguing with the customer service, they finally cancelled me under the free 2 month plan that I signed up for.
I went through a free month twice when the service I was on either jacked the prices up intolerably or vanished in the night (92 and 94). then I got the cheap aol (bring your own access thing) when my older kid was in middle school, for the parental controls.. kept that til my younger kid figured out how to get around them.
I had an account back when they were still hourly charge. Actually, my friend let me use his account. I made the mistake of charging like $300 on the service.
You people mean to tell me that I'm the only guy here that had an AOHell account just so I could play Neverwinter Nights when it was first released?!???? And no, youngsters, I'm not talking about the super-whippydyne 3D version released by Atari last year...
Yeah, I used one of their 50 hour free trials back when it was an hourly service. Even back then they gave you a bunch of free hours every time you tried to quit, so I probably had a free account with them for at least 3 months
Used to have it back on my old 486SX (25MHz I think). That was one slow rig...I remember double-clicking Netscape Navigator and it taking the computer about 2-3 solid minutes to load it up. Then some fvck somehow got our login/password and charged up a bunch of calls and we get a $100 phone bill. Haha.
Temporarily (free), yeah...then we forgot to cancel and got stuck with about 60 bucks in charges. AOL sucks..but at least they provide a seemingly endless supply of targets/coasters..depending on how you view things..
