Has anybody had problems with there maxtor 20 gig-40 gig hard drives?
I have a 20 gig 7200 ata 66 that I got from staples with a free stick of ram.
Well the drives is going wacky. I always got more errors with this drive then with my quantum, but I thought it was other things causing it. Now my drive cant even boot sometimes, other times it will boot but scan disk will report all kinds of problems even after a frsh format. Now I repartitioned it into two 10 gig drives and now I cant format the extended/logical portion. Scan disk says to replace the drive. norton utilities goes thropugh a long process of fixing things and then I get the same problems when I try to boot.
I read somewhere that there has been quite a lot of rma's on these recent 20-40gig 7200 rpm drives. I was qurious if anyone else had this problem.

I have a 20 GB 7200 RPM ATA66 Maxtor that I got a couple months ago. Been fast, quiet, and error-free for me -- so far. The only "problem" I have with it is that it's already full! I wish I would have got the 40 GB.....

I haven't heard about more problems than usual with these drives. Just curious, where have you heard this? I have several gigs of mp3's on my drive and I sure don't want to lose them. You know how long it takes to download all those on a 56k modem?

I think you should take advantage of Maxtor's good warranty and get a new drive. Or just return it for exchange at Staples if it's not too late.

I have the 30 gig model
been using it for about a month
no problems so far
also have the 13.6 gig model been using since Jan with no problems

I have had problems with the older models 4, and 5 gigs
the customer service people are pretty nice and usually will send you an RMA with very little questions asked.

No problems on my 30GB, then again it's just used for mass storage. All my software including W2K is run off my 10GB SCSI drive.

Well I low level formatted it with max blasts max diagnostic program. I used the write feature. It took about 4 hours or more.

I now have 20 gig that reports it is a 19 gig in my computer. In the bios it is a 20 gig but in windows 19 gig. Does that entitle me to a rma? Since I lost a gig?

I purchased mine a few months ago and have never had any problems. (knock, knock) I bought this drive for many reasons one of which was their haggle-free return policy that I kept hearing so much about. I hope I never have to find out but if I do I hope it's true. Anyway, good luck.:)
Oh, I think maybe that gig you're not seeing is there but whatever operating system and other software or programs you have loaded is using that gig or so and won't show up as available drive space. Just a guess.

From Power Joe..

HD makers say:
1 KB = 1,000 bytes
1 MB = 1,000 KB = 1,000,000 bytes
1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000,000 bytes
30GB = 30,000,000,000 bytes

Microsoft says:
1 KB = 1,024 bytes
1 MB = 1,024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes
1 GB = 1,024 MB = 1,073,741,824 bytes
27.93 GB = 30,000,000,000 bytes

Damaged, you beat me to it... :)

but before all these probs, it was reported as 20 gig drive in my computer, now 19 gigs??????????? 1024 x 1024= 1048756 x20= 20971520 or 1024 x 1024=1048756 x 19=19922194

I know that it is really a 20.7 gig drive so the .7 takes up a lot of extra 24 bits at the end of kilobyte.I should see a 20 gig in my computer not 19.

Good, well priced drive.

Well, I can only agree with the others. I have the 40 and 20 GB version and they have worked great!

What mobo are you using?

Are you using the 80-pin ATA66 cable?

What is your PCI bus set to? If other than 33 MHz?

Good luck!

Zogg,

A Gb in address space or in memory is 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1,073,741,824!!!!
You're last posting had a calculation for Mb, not Gb!

Refigure using this number. 1,073,741,824 x 19 = 20,401,094,656
My bet is Windows98 shows this drive's capacity as 19.3Gb, or thereabouts.

My 7200 rpm Maxtor 40.7 Gb hard drive originally showed up as 37.9Gb.
This is normal. My other drives showed up similarly short.

You're not due an RMA, the hard drive manufacturers don't figure space the same way memory manufacturers do or the way programmers figure address space, which are both done as powers of 2. Just as others have explained, a GB is almost universally measured by drive manufacturers as 1,000,000,000 bytes.

BTW, I'm a sixth-time Maxtor owner; never had a problem, they're all
still working, from a 212Mb to a 1.6Gb, 6.4Gb, 7.2Gb, 13.6Gb and a
40.7Gb. I recommend these drives over and over!
