POLL: Greatest Rock & Roll Martyr

mar·tyr ( P ) Pronunciation Key (märtr)
n.
One who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles.
One who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause, or principle.

I don't think any of them made great sacrifices or suffered in order to further a belief, cause or principle.

Yeah that's why Chapin stands out in my mind. He spent his entire professional life crusading against hunger.

Admirable. I didn't know that. but i don't think that would make him a 'martyr'. But you are right, it would be closer than any other on the list (that i know anything about).

Indeed. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1986 in recognition of his work. He toured constantly, performed almost nightly, and donated almost everything he took in.

He didn't die for his cause, although he was killed in a car crash on his way to yet another benefit concert.....he comes close 🙂

I meant martyr in the 'loose' sense of a person who gave their life for rock & roll.

I think Lennon is the only real martyr in there.....

Agreed, most of the others (that I recognized) died from thier own vices or accidents. John was murdered.

I too agree, I think it is a total misuse of the term martyr to even think of applying it to someone like Kurt Cobaine. People who commit suicide are not martyrs.

In the loose sense of the word they gave themselve to drugs. Well not everyone on the list but many. Sorry, I like music, drugs and many of the musicians on your list, but I am offended by the term martyr. And anyone who gives their life to rock 'n roll is a moron.
