definitely Nas. illmatic was a classic, and his second album really killed it. check out his flow on It Was Written, just close your eyes and listen to why he is the greatest....although I have to admit Gods Son was a disappointment besides the first three songs.

on a side note, Jay-Z's Black Album sounds real good so far..Jay-Z is definitely top 10, maybe top 5
'the message', 'street dreams', 'affirmative action', 'if i ruled the world'...'it was' is an amazing album.

i liked god's son. it was competing with jay-z's blueprint 2, and i thought it was a stronger album. especially the last few tracks dedicated to his mom. 'heaven' and 'one last dance' had so much heart and soul poured into those lyrics, its unbelievable.

don't forget 'watch dem n*ggas','take it in blood','nas is coming','black girl lost'..these tracks are overlooked a lot cuz of the more popular ones on the cd. check out his lyrical flow on those...i'm not suprised no one is really mentioning nas, he never 'quite' went mainstream..

Wha?!?! Where is Skee-Lo on this list? No Skee-Lo, No vote for me. I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller...........

Canibus is one of the sickest battle rappers ever... he's a good freestyler and don't forget he killed LL. Not to mention lyrically he's my brother's fav rapper, and my bro competes in freestyle competitions.

I'm torn on who to vote for....

For one, 2pac was simply amazing. I suppose he would get my vote considering the question is greatest rapper... however, in the same breath, Dr.Dre has done more FOR the the rap game than most of these guys. As a solo rapper he might not have the skills or flow that some of these guys have, but the total package is there, as a rapper, producer, eye for talent, etc. I would bet that if you asked a bunch of random people the first rap song they remember, it would be Nothin but a G thang. Obviously people came before him, but I think that was one of the biggest mainstream hits, that people remember. I know it is the first one I remember, and the one that got me into rap.

I voted for Eminem.

This seems like a good place to ask rather than resurrecting an old thread: Why is Outkast's newest album (as a whole) so well acclaimed? The idea of having each guy do their own thing is pretty cool. But it only half worked. I love Speakerboxx and listen to it all the time. But I can't stand the other disc (The Love Below?). What tracks should I listen to change my opinion of it? Most of it just seems like crap.

Creating a poll for the greatest rapper ever and including:
Jay Z
50 Cent
Nas
Canibus
Common
Kool G Rap
Xzibit
Talib Kweli
Busta Rhymes
Big Pun
Ludacris
DMX
Big L
Chino XL
is an affront to the ears of anyone that listens to rap music

Dr Dre
Ice Cube
LL Cool J
Eminem
Melle Mel
Rakim
KRS-One
Big Daddy Kane
Kool Moe Dee
Tupac Shakur
Eazy E
Chuck D
Grandmaster Flash
Doug E Fresh
Slick Rick
Q-Tip, Phife and Ali Shaheed Muhammad
are all that is needed, personally I think it is Ice Cube or Dre hands down

Why not just add Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer and Lil Romeo to complete your list?

Dre is definitely unique/special in that he started out as a producer and a rapper... However, although production and beats are important, the greatest rapper shouldn't need fancy production to shine. For example, 2Pac's charisma and emotion are enough to turn any mediocre beat into a good song... I don't think Dre can do this. G Thang was a sick beat, and without Snoop, I don't know if the song would have received the accolades it did since Snoop is also a huge talent (Let Me Ride was also a sick sick Snoop/Dre song). Without a doubt Dre gets his props, but he wasn't on 2Pac's level. Notorious BIG, Eminem, Rakim etc were others who were/are enjoyable just to listen to freestyling... they don't/didn't need anything or anyone but themselves to rip the mic, which I think defines them as some of the greatest.

You mentioned alot of historical rappers who definitely had a major impact for their respective era's... But like I mentioned before, it's all subjective... some people will define "greatest" as pioneering a certain genre and flipping the genre upside down in ways mainstream has never done. Some will define "greatest" as going platinum 3+ times. Some will define "greatest" as ruling the underground scene and/or killing MC's as a battle or freestyle rapper. Others see greatness as addressing political and cultural issues, and using their music as a vehicle to promote awareness.

You could go down the top list who you think shouldn't belong there and someone will tell you why they think they do belong there. Some examples: Jay-Z/Nas, incredible staying power and mainstream appeal (they have individually outsold albums than about half the people on your list); Canibus/Xzibit, ridiculous battle rappers whose lyrical ability far surpass many on your list IMO: Eazy E, Q-Tip, Kool Moe Dee, or Melle Mel (the 2 aforementioned would murder them in a competition on stage); Common and Talib Kweli are exceptional rappers who ushered a new era in black awareness; Busta Rhymes, emerged from his old group "Leaders of the New School" to become the king of cameos and helped promote mainstream acceptance of "rap"; Big Pun, incredible flow/lyrics and is a major reason why the Latin community has embraced "rap"; etc.

Also, you named Q-Tip and Phife in the same sentence... We're not talking about groups, but individuals. Could Q-Tip have achieved what he has done without Tribe? Probably not, he doesn't have the charisma of Tupac/Eminem/many other rappers to be defined as "greatest". But people who are hardcore Tribe fans would argue until they're blue in the lungs that he's the greatest of all time (to them).

I think the poll has enough people to cover the top 5, if not the top 10 at the moment. But I'll add Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, and Grandmaster Flash, and Doug E Fresh to satisfy old schoolers 🙂

How do you guys justify your Tupac answer? I mean come on... just becuase he died he is the best? Tupac was nowhere near the rapper Eminem is.
