I have 768k down/128k up cable. I don't get that awful evening slowdown because I live in the middle of nowhere. <100 pings in every game I play. The only thing I don't like about it is how difficult it is to run services over it. I can't even host my own e-mail! :(

52Kbps over dial up. Still waiting for the promised and promised and promised and promised Comcast cable modem access. (Thought the digital cable TV content is great!) They say they are waiting for thier broadband connection before they can switch it on.... more promises....:|

I'm on OOL too. Are those speeds from DSL Reports?

<< What is this tweak you speak of? >>

I believe the tweak works in both 2000 Pro and XP. Some peeps report no noticeable change. I noticed quite a difference in my home and workplace bandwidth.

Here's the link to the thread I got it from:

QOS 20% Bandwidth Reservation in 2K & XP

Requires the use of MMC or specific run commands, but the instructions are there. Pretty easy to do.

Nice tweak. Made difference for me. Thanks. :)

I had originally posted that the Bandwidth tweak worked in both 2K Pro and XP Pro, I haven't tried it in 2K or even know if the QOS set up reserves the default 20%.

If I have time tomorrow I'll try it on one of my 2K Pro workstations. Sorry if anyone's been tryin' to get it to work in 2K and can't!!
If any of ya'll give it a shot before I do, post here and tell us what ya did!

<< 28.8 Dial up baby!
Phone lines go no higher!
>>

Looks like im no the only one suffering![/i] >>

I won't argue w/the suffering part. I still do use a Dial-up for testing remote connections - and to have handy in case, uh somethin' hiccups in the Cablehood.

Here's a quote from the US Robotics Perfomance Pro Modem page (which is my fav modem as far as dial-ups go).

<< *Capable of receiving downloads at up to 56 Kbps and sending at up to 31.2 Kbps. Actual download speeds you experience may be lower due to varying line conditions. Maximum download speeds in the U.S. and Canada are limited to 53K, due to regulatory limits on power output. Requires compatible analog phone line and server equipment. >>

Other Dial-up modem specs tote 56.6kbps down/33.6kbps up - it's a marketing grey area cuz they're close enough in spec to not be falsely advertising. Note that initial connection speed (authentication and release through ISP) is often rated higher than actual throughput. So, though my Performance Pro Modem works great for a Dial-up and the OS says it connects at 52.3, actual throughput is nowhere near that mark.

Then of course, there is the line condition, distance to POP - and everybody's favorite, net congestion. It's the line condition which is the major factor regarding Dial-ups. The Telco's limit analog throughput to somewhere in the 56'ish range. From my previous apartment residence, I couldn't "connect" higher than 39.4 - Same modem, new house w/better quality lines = fairly consistent 52.3. Again, continued throughput varies. Nice to have the backup though.

Anybody familiar w/quality of Cable Modems?

Are they all created equal? Gotta believe quality of hardware makes some kinda difference.

<< DSL, since cable here really blows (30kb down anyone?) >>

Ouch... It actually hurts to read that Marty  ;)

Now, I know there have got to be some more Satellite chaps out there! For you four SATS, what'er yer speeds!? Yeah, I know there are only 3 Satellite votes right now, but one of those CABLE posters are SAT's in diguise.

And you T & OC Carnivores, what's it runnin' you (or your company) to play with that kind of fire? Man, if I had that kind of play speed I'd sleep only when there's no other option! It'd be a shame to let that kind of access sit idle :p

had cable in bryan tx summer 98, didn't really test it much
moved back to austin for school ($200 a month in bryan, $650 a month in austin) and found the cable company didn't do cable modems yet.

moved to another apt in austin in aug 99, got about 350KB/sec down and 30 KB/sec up on the cable modem there

moved to a place featuring fractional T-1 setup, 80/80KB both ways, the service started to blow when everyone started using gnutella and morpheus.

just switched to a real telco (i bet southwestern bell figured no one would ever switch to them) and got DSL 1.2Mb/128Kb. which of course is slower peak uploading but it kicks the sh!t out of the morpheus clogged T-1 lines.

Grrrrr... Blazenet Cable Modem.. I mean Suscom@Home.. err.. I mean Suscom@Blazenet. Seriously, our local cable ISP (Blazenet) sold out to Suscom Communications (cable tv, etc) and now that @Home went down the tubes all the customers are apparently back on Blazenet. The connection sucks nuts.. pings have been horrible, getting "this page cannot be displayed" way too often.. seriously considering DSL and channel bonding both connections, so at least if one goes down we still have the other. :( Sorry, just frustrated.. when we were on @home I could get almost 300kb/s downloads! Before the switchover I was lucky to hit more than 50-70k/s... now we're back on Blazenet and it's even slower. Just checked one of those speed tests and it reports 84.5kb/s..... other people get 300k/s or more =( They're throttling or have too many customers or something.

Throtteling or something. I know for now, I'm pretty fortunate. Relatively new neighborhood, not that many CABLE TV subscribers much less BROADBAND subscribers. DSL is also quickly becoming available, so hopefully some will be lured to that option and not my little chunk of the net.

What I don't know is... whether or not there's a difference between the standard High Speed Cable Internet Access and Digital High Speed Cable Access. If I go digital, I'm forced to pay for a digital box for every TV in the house (if I wannna get content). As it is now, all my tubes pull in fine w/just a splitter. But, if that's what I has ta do to keep my Internet connection sweet - I'll eventually front the green for it.

So, any of you CABLEonians using the Digital stuff? Anybody w/da knowledge please grace us with your input - Oh, and type LOUD cause my radio's blastin' and I'm havin' trouble hearing you ;)

Just got back online :D Road construction a mile from my house took down our Cable Service. Cable came back up but they had rolled out too many segments of Broadband in other areas to make it available again in my area until now. Seems quick and snappy so far!

Used a Dial-up during the outtage (approx 1 month). It worked. Didn't game much at first, thought I could barely do email ;) but I did realize just how much time I spent/wasted/whatever when I have Cable access!! Whoah, I actually started getting stuff done around the house! Uh, and paying attention to my BF heh heh, snicker :p

Uh, but now that I'm back on, I hear all this jazz about @HOME folding!? $#%# Pardon my late coming on the topic. NMF. Cable company says there won't be an interruption in service... hmmm

Oh yeah, That DSLreports thing gave me a 2793 download and 965 upload. I don't remember the bps kbps mbps BS, but I think you know what I mean.

Cable, and I still walked to school uphill both ways, barefoot over broken glass, in the snow and then over the parts of the street that the salt trucks had hit real hard!!!

Adelphia powerlink (the worst-rated cable provider on dsl reports). 3.3 megs down, 15 kb/s up. Used to have RoadRunner. God I miss it. Still alot better than dial up, however.

Direcduo gray dish, other than online gaming, it is great. My download is 80KB, compared to 2.8 for dialup. Streaming in broadband is no problem either
I heard the new white dishes double the download speed.
