9600pro by a country mile.

When the new 5600U 400/400 came out some people were proclaiming it faster than the 9600pro. Problem is, Nvidia ?optimizes/cheats/hacks IQ? for only the games that hardware sites generally use for benchmarking, so the 5600U was looking fairly decent against the 9600pro. Problem is, as soon as you look at different selection of games, the 9600pro takes a big lead.

In Anandtech?s 9800XT ? article, he introduced a lot of new games for benchmarking. In 13 games the 9600 pro averaged ? 26.8% ?faster than the 5600U. And that 26.8% average still included a few Nvidia ?optimized? games. Once you move away from these few optimized games, in my estimation the 9600 pro is looking to be way faster than a 5600U.

In some DX9 stuff the 9600 pro is looking techreport ? over twice as fast as the 5600U, even with 5600U running only DX8.1.

why? because people think the 9600 pro is better? maybe people recommend the 9600 pro because it is simply better?

maybe, but looking at the benchmarks it don't look that much better.
everyone keeps mentioning performance in games that aren't even out yet, but that performance can change

Just bought the PNY 5600U 400/800 flipchip for my bud's birthday gift.
I installed it into his computer which by the way is only a PIII 1 GHz 512MB rig.
All the games flew quite nicely with very nice framerates and image quality. I would love to see what it can do
in my 2.8 P4 rig. Seeing is believing gents and the 5600U is no slouch even on slower CPU rigs.

Games tried include: UT, UT2003, Unreal II, Splinter Cell (which was bundled with the card), C&C cola umm I mean
generals, Neverwinter Nights, and Giants. I haven't tried any others yet but that is a terrific start.

I wouldn't lie you ya.
The card is sweet for the bucks. (154.00 after rebates @ Best Buy.).

Benchmarks. Keep in mind the 9600P will have better-looking AA and faster DX9 performance--there really is not doubt about that.

I would have to say 9600pro if not only because 5600 can't do direct X9 good, but also because it preformed marginally better in benchmarks.

Numbers say the 9600pro is definitely 'faster' than the FX5600 ultra. With that said I have a FX5600 ultra and it plays all current/past games fine at medium resolutions. UT2k3, Vice City, WC3, TW2k3, etc... Radeon 9600pro is supposedly more future proof since they anticipate its performance on HL2 to be greater, but if you find a FX5600 ultra for a good price ($100 range) then its not a bad buy at all. However if prices are equal, I'd purchase a Radeon 9600pro.

I agree. $100 for a 5600U is a really good buy.

I?ve read posts both from people who were happy with their 5600U, and others who weren?t so happy because of the low frame rates in a particular game. It may depend on what you upgraded from and what games you play. Going to a 5600U from a 7500/MX440 may seem like a revelation. Upgrading to a 5600U from a 4200 may not prove so good in a lot of games.

I?m going to throw a few more benchmarks into the pot. While these are benchmarks from a ?ATI?s? presentation, I still think they illustrate how much faster the 9600pro is going to be in a lot of games.

9600 pro? performance advantage over 5600U in ~ % ? (1280x1024 4AA/8AF) ?

HL2 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 200% ? ?faster
Tomb Raider ? ? ? ? ? 180
BF 1942 ? ? ? ? ? ? 130
Colin McRae Rally 3 ? ? 115
Humvee Assult ? ? ? ?100
Madden 2004 ? ? ? ?75
Tron 2.0 ? ? ? ? ? ? 50

Hardwarefr article the 5600U was under-performing on quite a few titles too ? 9600pro advantage (1600x1200) ?

TOCA Race Driver ? ? ?72% ?faster
NASCAR Racing 2003 ? ? 38
Rallisport Challenge ?? ?88
Need for Speed:HP2 ? ? ? 98
F1 2002 ? ? ? ? ? ? ?47

So, if these additional benches (and Anand?s new game benches) are indicative of the 5600U?s general performance outside of the 10 -12 games the hardware sites usually benchmark with, the 5600U doesn?t look that great.
