I'm curious to know from the frequent FPS (like 1942) gamers, what OS do you run with?

Really? I tried gaming in Win2k once years ago. It was lousey, I went back to 98. Now that I had finally gotten XP, and hadn't installed 98 first, I was worried I had 'locked' myself out of a good OS for gaming.

Dual boot W98 + XP Pro, best of both worlds, use 98 for anything where XP "compatibility" means no sound or not running stably.

I would say I have the best of 3 worlds. I use XP for all the latest games. But I do have a P3 650 @ 850 running 98SE and a Pentium 266 running DOS. I'm a FPS but my granddaughter is trying to get me into RPGs.

Thanks all.

Wow, 78% XP Pro. What is it about the XP (Pro) OS that is better? Stability or better IP and CPU performance capabilities?

I would say without hesitation that WindowsXP is much more stable than 9x.

As for Win2k, when I first installed it, I decided I wanted to go back to win98 for games, but when I got win98 installed again, I found it to be alot slower than win2k was, so I switched back, and used it for gaming for the next year or so without any problems.

I'm hoping that Microsoft's new Virtual PC 2004 is going to solve my 'oldschool' gaming problems. I'm hoping it's going to be able to run a virtual machine with 98 until XP Pro, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. If it has support for all hardware that 98 did, and can run at a reasonable speed with the hardware available today, it should prove fairly useful.

For me, the difference between Win 98 and XP Pro was like night and day in terms of stability-- 98 would crash at least twice a day, every few days--this would lead to reformats and reinstalls but eventually the same thing would happen again. I have never had XP Pro reboot on me, nor crash--twice it sort of crashed, but just kind of "refreshed" explorer without rebooting my comp and I didn't lose any info in open files. I like it a lot. :D:beer:

I just couldn't imaging that someone would spend $600+ for a server license. Not everyone claims to be an IT consultant and gets NFRs on the cheap, right?

WIN XP PRO
But for a non updated pc, win98 will give him the opportunity to a more stable system with less memory requirements
I say that, because when it comes to low end systems, most of the new applications and games are better to be installed in my opinion under win98.
For high end systems there's no question WIN XP PRO
