[Poll] Gamers--best mouse pad for an optical?

Want to point to some studies on this? I played QI and QII hardcore for several years, and I never lost a frag due to my mousepad. Hell, I never noticed a difference playing with no mousepad vs. with one. With optical mice especially, it makes no difference the surface that they are placed on (with the exception of reflective surfaces). I'll say it again - go generic. It is a waste of money.

Steve

Sure... take a Poll of all Pro gamers (Cal-invite level) on Sogamed. There was a vote somewhere (do a search)... you will see most prefers some kind of high end mouse pad vs. No surface. Also, any those attendence at the CPL will tell you it is hard to find someone with a generic mouse pad or none at all.

And yes... there is a hugh difference between the surface. The surface and the feet (use Tafeon for best result.. aka mouse skates) will allow you to glide smoother and track better with less skipping. My logitech red SE will skip on a generic Microcenter mouse pad. However, with a func 1030 it will never skip.
In hardcore gaming.... if my mouse slips even once during a match. That's unacceptable.

I have played in a few top counter-strike team in North America, and none of us have generic mouse pad. It is something that are easily agreed by my teammates that generic doesn't come close to beening good enough.

Au contraire my friend, I hardly worked my ass off last year. I'm still in high school, and I think we all know that work and high school simply do not coincide. But anyways, my point still stands, professional gamers make me laugh. Who watches that stuff? I respect athletes and movie stars because they entertain millions of people, but seriously, no one cares if you are the best Quake III player in the world. You might get the hardware manufacturers to sponser your tournaments, but that doesn't mean I have to respect that. And don't get me started when they call themselves cyberathletes.

Same can be said for Magic The gathering players before they got 'big' and were shown on channels such as ESPN. The fact of matter is, very few make a living of Pro-Gaming (due to pro-gaming beening in its infancy). Most 'pro' gamers have a second job to sponsor their dream to play in this level. Who watches that stuff?.... ummm let me refresh your memory. Starcraft is currently showed on every major TV stations in South Korea. Players there have millions of fans, you can find daily gaming scores on the nightly News. Also.. WCG hosts hugh events each year with thousands of people watching in the stadiums along.
Just look at the CPL here in the USA. They recieved a 45 Million$$$ investment to expand the league and CPL. =\
We really couldn't care less about if you respect us or not; No one asked for it... but please be at least a little more informed before you posts.

$45 mill but where is that going to? Is it going to make it $45 mills better for the CPL this year?

Thats *Korea* man. You won't find it 'mainstream' for years to become but it will probably become mainstream sometime or never. You may find it over there they also had a wedding because of two SC or WC or some other thing like that. THAT's also not mainstream.

Of course the top people make big money but then the top people in ANYTHING make big money. Comparitively its still very small to what others make. Movie star -$5 mill - $20 mill per film. Now thats hardly work is it?

True but in the end DO need people to respect or at least appreciate Pro Gamers to make it mainstream. Otherwise it will never become mainstream with no fans. All the major sports in the world have 'fans'. Without them they are nothing or not much. No one would aspire to be 'that' top player with no fans.

I'd still prefer to be the athlete that I am then a cyberathlete. But you take your choices in life.

btw what do you game in? My mate could own you at CS! lol not me though, anyone can beat me.

The league is slowly expanding... the prizes are slowly getting larger each time. Granted it is not anywhere near the size of gaming world in Korea... it is moving towards that direction. (Actually I don't fully agree with CPL's method of expansion or the rate which they choose to do it or their choice of spending with the investment.... but that's for another topic)

It is true they need fans... what I am saying is they do have fans.
Are you saying you can't be both? I play Basketball (aau) and run track (not anymore for school... since I am applying for med school at KU) in high school. And I play computer games... if I can play at Pro-level, hey why not?

My mate could own you at CS! lol not me though, anyone can beat me.

What at game do I play? Counter-Strike and warcraft 3 (was top 40 on bnet with my newbie roommate ilovedivx). I co-lead BiOdegradeable Heroes with Sliceacid for about a year. BiO is currently ranked #8 in North America (www.gotfrag.com). I am also the leader of Panda (up and coming team with some amazing LAN accomplishments, but most of us quit due to time problems). Which cal-i team is your friend on? If he wasn't, then I doubt he can compete at our level.
=\

I was just saying that I'd prefer to be an athlete then a cyberathlete. I'm sure you can be both but when you get to the top end its going to be one or the other. You don't have time to do both. If you train track or bball or whatever sport (mines Olympic Weight Lifting main, and plenty of other sports Rugby got scouted to play for a top London team) you just don't have time to do it all. Along with studies also.

Yeah I didn't really like the CPL or how it was done either but its hard so they were doing what they could. Don't follow it anymore.

I'm in England btw. My friend use to play for 4k. They use to be the very top team in England. He doesn't game much either and nor does anyone else. Just do other things now a days. I suppose I'll game after my exams a bit and I'll have cable then. My friend has mad skills in CS since hes been playing it since it was first out years ago with numerous of changes blah blah blah. Just crazy to see how good he is and how he kills! Its quite freakish! But I'm sure hes not as sharp as he doesn't play much.

I bet I can kick your ass on TTT or GT3 😀 Now they are the games I'm good at. Can't wait to get them online as I LOVE those games in my spare time. Use to play TTT A LOT but my mates are crap so they stopped as I got too good for them. Then that made playing it boring 🙁, and I only do consoles. I can't play sticks to save my life!

I think the way forward for Pro Gamers is to have local teams and have teams go and play *away* and *home* games. Like real sports. That would be cool. LAN's aren't often enough I don't think. I think they don't play often enough face to face. Needs more funding. Oh well if you can go game, can't go study.

I will never be good enough to play Basketball in NBA no matter how much I practiced. Just like no matter how much CS some NBA players practiced they won't be able to play at our level.

yes 4K was a good team ~_~ they are ranked #8 in the world ranking... however, you will probably find our skill level differ not by much 😉

You can study and game at cal-i level. It just very tough too....
I have KU (university of kansas), CS practices, girlfriend, work.... but it is doable. Not just one or the other.

I am sure u can kick my ass in GT3.

anyone here used the ratpadzGS?

Yep, I've had it for a few weeks thanks to a good deal at PCMODS. I like it - my MSIE glides much smoother than on my generic pad. As a bonus, it looks cool and is easier on the wrist.

I favor my Everglide Optical over my Ratpadz GS. But then again, could be the mouseskatez are screwing up the friction between the mouse and pad.

Just bought a fUnc 1030 and absolutely love it, but I'm still trying to decide whether I like the rough or smooth side better.

anyone here use a fUnc sufrace 1030 for over a year? I read from dans data I believe that the surface wears out after several months use or so, causeing it to be very slick and shiny (and causing problems w/ optical mice over the slick area)

no it doesn't wear out. I had my (got it free for a product review on gamershome.com) for about 2 years now. It is still exactly same as the day I got it (I use the rough side).
