This is for all you athiests and agnostics, have you ever prayed to God? (at a time in your life when you weren't religious. I don't care if you used to be religious and prayed.)

I'm an Atheist, and I said yes.

I wasn't necessarily praying to a god of any certain religion (Christianity, Islam, etc.). I was at a really bad time in my life, and the prayer went something like "God, if you exist, I could use some help here."

I am an Agnostic, and I find the very idea of "praying" to something utterly ridiculous.

then you're an atheist.

Why? There are those who firmly believe in a deity without seeing any point in praying to it.

There is a difference between believing and being religious.

If you're an agnostic, you acknowledge the possibility of a supreme being, but claim that it is impossible to prove and thus live your life accordingly. As such, you could understand why someone would pray, though you do not do it yourself.

I guess it just depends on your level of agnosticism.

Correct. If a "supreme being" exists, that does not mean necessarily that it needs to be "prayed to" and "worshipped". I have enough self-confidence and faith in my own abilities that I find the need to "worship" something abhorrent.

I can understand why people do a lot of things that i find utterly ridiculous, but to me the idea of praying or worshipping just seems utterly ridiculous, others are free to think whatever they like. :)

I'm agnostic, and I specifically prayed to allah, krishna, and buddha on a few occasions.

Ironies abound with my username, no? :D

And still he takes the bus to work - why? Because Jesus saves.

Ermmm, why would I pray to something that doesn't exist? I prefer to solve my own problems I'm not so small minded as to think there is some all powerful omnicient being who is going to solve all my problems for me.

I was raised Protestant and I was taught to pray as a kid. My family is not very religious, but it was just something my mom taught me to do. Over the years (I'm 22 now), I have become increasingly agnostic, but for some strange reason I continue to "pray" just about every night as long as I think about it. I don't kneel next to the bed or anything, I just lie there in bed and kinda put my thoughts out there. I dunno, I guess it's not praying so much as focusing on people that are in my thoughts.

That's fairly natural, actually. In a crappy situation it's nice to think that maybe there is a super power that can just make everything better. It doesn't mean that you believe in that super power - just that you really want your mom to come out well.

Before I had surgery on my legs the Army chaplain came by and asked if I wanted to pray with him. I politely told him no, and he looked at me like he had never heard that answer before.
