I am required to conduct a survey for my Senior Project required for me to graduate high school 😉. I am a senior at North Salem High School in Salem, Oregon, and in this paper I am trying to show that Linux and other open-source applications should be used more in education, especially public education amid such budget crises that are being faced in Oregon, and many other states.

I would greatly appreciate you helping me out by responding to this poll, Thanks.

What do you think of Linux and open-source application in public education?
  1. Linux and open-source applications should be used on 99% of all computers in education.
  2. Linux and open-source applications and Microsoft products should split the share 50-50.
  3. Who needs Linux? Linux is too hard to use and Microsoft products don't cost that much.
  4. Use what's best to teach/help students.

I'm sure that I'm dreaming here, but could I possibly get a sticky for a couple days on this, Please. 🙂 I really need this research.
 
Assuming the program isn't that complicated to USE, Linux will be ok. However, someone has to install it and configure it so it works correctly, which in IMHO is the hardest part. All you need is an icon on the desktop for the applicatoin and it should work.
 
Yeah, I personally think that in a school Linux could become tremendously useful, for both economic and learning reasons. Schools are suppsed to be a learning environment and it culd hurt to teach kids how to use Linux along with Windows.

Consider learning Linux an investment. You spend the time now, and then you get hired for an IT department that can't afford to fire you, the *nix guru, later.😉

I do consider learning Linux an investment. In fact, my linux box's CPU fan died today, so I have to post this in windows. Actually, it is my BSD box now, but I don't like it as much. Mandrake worked so well for me.
 
Tough call. I learned all my programming in college on Unix machines. Unfortunately when I got the real world everyone uses windows. So basic stuff like using MFC classes, and Visual C++ was totally lost upon me. I had learn it all on my own. I understand that teaching MS programming is very difficult, but it should be something thats taught in at least one class in every computer science degree program.

I don't think it should ever be completely one-sided. Just as school kids no longer learn exclusively on Macs...higher education students should not learn exclusively on MS or Linux. Both need to be taught.

Well in the high school environment there are a bunch of kids running around who's time really is worthless.
