[Poll] For all the BitTorrent and other P2P users...

I like to contribute to the idea of Peer 2 Peer technology but my question is.... How long do you keep the Torrents uploading? I don't want to cut people off but i'd like to get some of my d/l and u/l bandwidth back for other purposes... What is your general rule of thumb?

I hate to say it, but generally I'll stop sharing as soon as the download's done (this is Bittorrent I'm talking about, anything else will be shared for as long as it exists on my hard drive.) I figure I have an excuse for it though... BT completely and utterly rapes a dialup connection to the point where you get disconnected from IRC while using it. I'll give back as much as I can give, but BT is sometimes just too much 🙁

I usually let stuff download overnight, so if I get back to my computer and something's finished I close it - and most of the time the upload exceeds the download, as it usually does...

if there's lots of seeders, i'll probably close it as soon as it's done.
if it's low on seeders, i'll upload several times what i downloaded.
if i'm the only seed, i'll stick around till there's a couple other seeds.
if it's a torrent i created, i'll stick around till everyone's done.

ex: a torrent i have had open for the last few days, downloaded 141mb, uploaded 2221mb, only seed for the last 2 days because people suck and run off. 🙁

We're instructed by our ISPs that keeping any upload for X amount of hours in a row will lead to bandwidth capping. Has happened to me twice (other constraints in the past) so I'm not gonna disobey this one. I cut my download/upload after every hour, wait 5-10 mins, then resume. After I'm done downloading, I'll seed it for the remainder of the hour and that's it.

Think of it this way. As long as you start DL/UL a different file, your bandwidth is being shared all the time. just for different files.

Leave it open until I've uploaded what I've downloaded, although most of the time, my upload exceeds my download cause it was done downloading overnight and just sat there uploading while I slept.

i try to upload a little more than i download, but when i get a 4GB file at 200k down and upload is capped at 14k up it's hard to justify leaving it open that long

I always upload at a faster pace than I download so I cut it off when it's done. I usually get 10-30 kb/s download speed but not more than that. I upload at 30 kb/s constantly. If I could download faster I'd leave it open.

varries from time to time... normally i'm sleeping when it finishes, so it will stay on till i wake up, or when i get home from class. usually 5-8 hrs after it ends, i'll reopen too if someone asks.

Either 24 hours or equal to the download, whichever's first, unless there are a number of seeds (at least ten), then I just kill it when it's done.

I stop sharing when the download is done, and re-open it about a week later (or when the number of seeders significantly decreases) to increase the longevity of a torrent.
