POLL: flooring the gas

In addition to OuterSquare's stall launching, how bad is flooring the gas on regular basis assuming you let the engine warm up fully before attempting it?

When I'm driving alone, I ocassionally give it a full throttle for the fun of it and just about every time when I have five or six friends in my van. The weight of five or six people makes it necessary to open up the 3.3L V6 engine all the way to get the van to accelerate to my satisfaction..

and OMG I got 15mpg the other day :Q

(was on 100mile trip with six passengers, so combined mpg can be looked as 90mpg)

You're tranny will probably go out in the van long before the engine!

Most engines today can handle it. They are rev limited sometimes 1000 RPM below where alot of breakdown starts to occur.

when i first got my car, i really never floored the gas coz i wanted the engine to break in. at that time, i got close to 400miles per tank when the empty light started to go on (it goes on at 14G). now i barely get 300miles before the light goes on.

Only ever at highway speeds to get the lazy tranny to downshift, once it does, I only keep it down to keep the tranny from shifting back. Lousy auto :|

Dunno, I do that pretty often. Not much choice if you want to get anywhere with 38kw engine on 1.8 ton machine 😉

I have that problem, too.

Got give it alot of gas either going uphill or coming off the interstate exit.

Any ideas what an estimate would be in fixing a downshifting problem in in auto trans ?

I floor it a lot. I have a 92 Civic with the 102 HP 16 valve engine and a 5 speed. It's fun to rev up sometimes, but sometimes I shift early.

You've got a lot more control with a manual, which translates to having the freedom to shift whenever you want, and to floor it whenever you want, without the gas pedal affecting the transmission.

Dont you have to adjust the detent cable?!?!?!? It's the cable that runs from your carb to the trans that makes it downshift at full throttle. Usually adjusts just like a clutch cable.

FreAk😀

Duh, how else am i going to smoke those tires 😉

On a new car just keep the RMP's down until the cam breaks in or it will severly reduce the life of the engine.

Are you looking to max your milleage? If you had 6 people in a van you probably had the AC on for comfort. That will kill your milleage as well.

Sometimes! My car (2000 Impreza sports) is rather slow. Actually, it is very slow. If I pull out to pass someone on the highway, I HAVE to floor it or else it is downright embarrassing!

Skoorb didn't buy you a Maxima??!! Shame on him!

just when people drivin piss me off

I get 8 MPG on a daily basis so quit your whining, 81 Z28 camaro w/350🙂

never.

i usually drive an F-250 crew cab with a V10. if i floor it i can visualize oceans of gas and $ burning up.

I don't currently have a car, but I'm sure I would occasionally.

It's not going to realistically shorten the life of your engine unless you're redlining it all the time.

There are 3 things that will kill any engine. I don't care if it's a racing engine designed to turn 10,000rpms, or what.

1) Oil, or lack of
2) Heat
3) RPMs

If you keep your car full of high quality, synthetic oil .. keep your coolant system in top shape, and keep the needle away from the redline.. your engine should last many tens of thousands of miles.

It saddens me greatly to see a new car with a blown engine just because some idiot didn't change his oil. What a waste! I have lawnmowers that have outlived peopes cars. That's bad. 😀

Every couple of days - I go over the mountains every day to get to school and I usually get stuck behing a truck going 5 mph. There is one spot I can pass, so when I get there I floor it. Love to kick in the 4 barrel. I've been taking it pretty easy of late because my bearings are going out and the engine has been knocking a lot. I'll have to replace them and I will be back to my old ways. BTW I now get 6-7mpg with my 351W - 210,000 miles on it.

Most definitely, how else will i be abel to drive aggresively and actually make it anywhere in a decent time. Yes it gets floored, but it also gets shifted at about 5000 rpm. Why the low shifts? Because I redlined, shifted, missed the next gear, and pegged the tach (this happpened at least 3 times) in my old 87 accord with > 150k miles 😉

I floor it all the time in all the cars I drove. The Maxima gets floored all the time, and it loves it! The engine begs me to be floored..I can't help it if my foot is heavy! Don't think the tranny loves me as much as the engine does though. Theres nothing like getting pushed back in your seat at 2000RPM.

Its fun flooring it in the 240SX and shifting at redline....mmmm...5-spd..the only way to drive.
