Okay, I'll put it in terms even your brother can understand. Offer to hand him a check for $255, and ask if he'll give you back $300 in cash, since it's "close to 300." If he does, then pocket the $45 and go ahead and agree with him that 255 is close to 300. If he doesn't, then tell him he just lost the argument.

Do the same thing with a $295 check. I'd say that's close to $300, but I still don't expect a free $5.

he argued that money isnt the same, and only integers are applicable. percentages dont seem to matter for anything except integers in his opinion

I take it these are not engineers. Even if you sat them down and drew the numbers out on paper for them, I doubt they will see 18% as a big deal. Even though you're right, this is an argument that makes you look like an uber-geek, and in the end that means YOU LOSE :p

Sometimes it's a sad lonely world for those of us who see beauty in accuracy and precision :(

no, they are not engineers. my girlfriend hates math and didnt argue back, and he thinks he knows a lot about math but doesnt. it is a tough situation.

295 and 300 are integers. Doesn't matter if they have $ in front of them or not. Does your friend even know what an integer is?

he is my brother in law, and no, apparently he does not. he is a college graduate that plays SWG all day and lives off of my sister. he has no clue of the world but he thinks since he graduated with a political science degree that he can out-argue anyone, anyday. he is truly ignorant.

edit: btw, i know 295 and 300 are integers..i was just telling you what he said :)

It's completely arbitrary. You can make an argument, but someone can always make one the other way. It's pointless. Now let's look at this from an intelligent person's point of view:

You could argue with her until she caves, making her feel dumb and getting her upset.

You could concede she has a point and get laid.

Now how close is it?

:D

the arguement isnt with her, so the chance to get laid has nothing to do with this lol :D

number-wise, they're not close
the margin of 'closeness' depends on the size of the number to me
255 isn't close to 300
but 1,599,255 is close to 1,599,300

as for my previous answer, height/distance-wise, they ARE close
when you're a football field's length high in the air - you will NOT know the difference between 255ft and 300ft

that isnt the point. we arent even arguing about that. he is saying 255, as in the number 255, is close to 300. period. end of statement. it has nothing to do with how it applies to a rollercoaster - that is just what started it.

yes, but i dont argue with her about this type of stuff. not worth it and i dont care anyway. he is a moron though and i feed off of proving him wrong. i live for it each and every day. call me a sicko, i dont mind, but you dont know him so you cant possibly understand how good it feels to rub it in his face that he is wrong.

oh, and btw, he is the type of person that NEVER says sorry if he does something wrong - not even to his wife (my sister)

You think too much, drink a beer.

If I drink one beer out of my 12 pack, then I no longer have close to a 12 pack!

I use that mentality whenever I need to decide wether or not to buy beer.
It works out very well most of the time.

Don't worry. I know people like that too. My ex-g/f's feminazi friend from years ago had it in for me and men in general. I got her back GOOD though :)

my girlfriend and i are going to six flags, and she is all scared of rollercoasters, so she was looking at the website where it says how high and how fast they go. she said "wow its almost 300 feet tall." i was like umm its 255ft, thats not close to 300ft. then my brother in law commented that he thinks its close as well. i said "so if you have 2.5 million dollars, is that almost 3 million dollars?"

he said yes, thats close. i said "ok, what if i had 150, is that close to 200?" (note: i was getting him to back into a corner and it worked). he said "no, its about percentages, and thats only 75%. 255/300 is 85%."

so i then said "what about a guy who is 6'-1" tall? is he almost 7'-0"? because that is like 84-85%." he follows up with "it only works with integers."

WHISKEY TANGO...

only integers? wtf is he even saying? so basically he is wrong, and i am curious if you guys would call 255 close to 300.

i think that is the most flawed logic ever...255 is not "close" to 300. id say maybe 270ish + is "close" to 300, but not 255. thats only half way up to the next hundred...how is that close?

My advice would be to Give It Up, MrDudeMan. It's not worth arguing about, espically with someone related to your girlfriend. Like it or not, you're going to have to put up with this guy.

you may have misunderstood the situation...my girlfriend started it, and my sisters husband (hence brother in law) is the ignorant one. i havent said anything else to him about it, so i did give it up, but i just wanted to make sure i wasnt seeing stars and i was actually being unreasonable.

It's close if you are rounding to nearest hundreds, otherwise no. It's all about the rounding!

no rounding involved in this...is it close how it is?
