Its pretty much a generally accepted fact among astonomers that life exists elsewhere in the universe. Or so my professors have all told me.
However, its also a generally accepted fact that we are never, ever going to come in contact with them.
If there are other space faring alien life forms, where are they? Why havent they come yet? Our 8000 year civilization is absolutely NOTHING compared to the timescale of the universe. There is no reason to believe we are one of the first, or one of the last civilizations. Considering the timespan, its likely thousands have come before us throughout the universe, so if long range space travel was possible, they would be here already, or at least some sort of concrete evidence.
This says nothing about the existence of those life forms, just that not only is inter or cross galactic space travel is just not feasible.
If we ever do meet another civilzation, it will be likely robotic, or just plain non-biological.
