I can't decide whether or not I should go ahead and bite the $10 a month bullet and get EverQuest. I still say it's ridiculous to pay $120 a year for a videogame, but I'm curious as to what I'm missing out on.

Also, could someone tell me how hard it is to close down an account, say if I got tired of playing after awhile, and wanted to close the account so I didn't get billed every month? (Run-on sentence, sorry).

The $120 is the least of your concerns. Take a look at the EverCrack addicts, & how much time they spend devoted to it.

I avoid it for the simple reason that I can't afford to get hooked on it.

I bought it at the urging of a friend and played it for about 3 weeks before I cancelled before my free month was up. It's really easy to cancel, so don't worry about that. It was fun, but I could tell if I kept playing, it would suck up a lot of my time that I should be devoting to school, so I dropped it. I'd say I'm done with massively multiplayer games, at least until Star Wars online comes out.

Well my good friend plays Asheron's call which is vaguely similar and he sells his extra equipment on Eeeebay, which more than makes up for the monthly charge. ( he also played Ultima Online and sold his character
for 570 bucks)

Now this guy sleeps 4 hours a night so can afford lots of time to the game, hence making it pay for itself. (Except for the lost hours of his life)

I don't play solely because I am too easilly addicted :) (Lost 1 year due to Muds, damn them, www.redragon.org)

I don't think there are any issues at all with closing out the accounts. There is no long term contract that you need to sign.

The downside to this style game is like all multiplayers in that you will meet jerks which can take all the joy away. Conversely, you meet
some great folks too. (I have 2 friends who met via an online MUD and are now married, speaking soley thru the mud for the 1st 6 months of their relationship)

Also Ultima2 is on its way, maybe wait to join that when it first comes out and you can start at square one along with everyone else and rise to be the strongest of em all !!!!

It's a pretty cool game. My girlfriend was worried that I would get addicted because I used to be totally addicted to text-based muds. While I no longer find them exciting with the advent of EQ, I don't find it nearly as addicting at those old text based muds were. I don't spend a lot of time on EQ but it's cool every now and then. You can choose to be billed once every 3 months for $25 instead so it's cheaper.

will never play a game that you have to pay more than the initial purchasing cost.

Paying to play after you've bought a game IMHO is crazy. The games themselves are too expensive already. Just get counterstrike or any other free internet game and you'll be happy.

Refusing to pay the monthly fee is sort of like refusing to pay for a game that requires a 3d accelerator. Now, and in the future, there will be games that require a monthly fee. 300,000 people pay the monthly fee for EQ.

my biggest gripe with EQ is that if you die, you lose oh upwards of 8 hours of experience... and that's NOT FUN damn them.

i quit very easily after level 45 :)

Eeeewwww... Asheron's Call? I can honestly say I spent more time downloading the big patch than I did actually playing the game. The graphics were so horrible I couldn't get into the game like in Everquest. Not very immersive.

$10/month isn't THAT much... I can't believe people make such a big deal out of it. They also have different payment plans, ie. 3 months/$25 and 6 months/$50.

Um....yeah it is. If I bought it now, a year from now I will have spent about $135 to play EverQuest. Seeing as there are free ISP's out there, ISP's for christ's sake! It's ridiculous to pay that much for one game. Currently I pay $22 a month for my ISP. I'm not gonna spend roughly half that for one game. Thanks for re-enforcing my desicion guys.

hey now. I have 16 different characters on EQ. I really enjoy the game. I used to play muds, (dragonquest, gemstone) but I like this better, but it isnt as addictive as they were. I play on weekends mostly. sometimes i will log on for an hour during the week but not often. I had no life before I ever started playing so I cant say that it takes up ypur life. When I am not playing, I read books, I avg about 2-3 a week. So if I didnt play, I would be reading more. But I am out of school, I have a good job, and I am single, so its not getting in the way of anything at the moment, unless you consider the fact that I would propbably spend more time here if I wasnt playing EQ.;)

Heh, I'll throw my two cents in just for good measure...

As others have said, the money fee is most definently not something you should be worried about. Once you dive into the world of MMORPGs, you'll see just how much goes into them and how unbelievably complex they are in every way. Again, if you decide to play, the last of your worries will be that $10 every month.

However, the thing you should worry about, as has been echoed probably millions of times on the net, is the time requirement. Well, I wouldn't say "requirement", I mean.. you could just play a MMORPG only with a reasonable # hours per month, but.. hahaha, that never happens. Goodbye grades, work, friends, family.. uhh.. anything else you care about? You probably won't as much as you used to after you're addicted.

I say the addiction is great, but only if the game is great. I don't think it's wise to inject your first shot of EverSmack this late in the game.... I quit AC recently and am just waiting for Anarchy Online or UO 2 or Shadowbane, whichever tickles my fancy the most.

Never played it. Never seen any screen shots. Never even knew you had to pay a monthly fee. Though now I'm intriged by what you guys are saying. It's that addicting, eh? Anybody have any links to screens of the gameplay or can tell me briefly what it's about (what the object of the game is)?

The addiction to cocaine, crack, alcohol, gambling, and everything else out there is also great... until it takes over your life, your family, your job, and your health.

I seriously don't like these games at all. The monthly fee hooks you to it, making you feel like you have to get your $10 worth out of it. They make it inconvenient to quit, no online-removal or account termination. Ugh. Stay away from them, your family will love you for it.

I played for little over a year, very addicting. I remeber a couple weekends I played for over 14 hours straight. It is worth the $10 if you see what is IN the game. The size of the world is huge, and always somewhere to go. One bad thing is they designed the game to balance by time sinks. In otherwords it is designed to take up tuns of time to do some very boring things. I would not buy everquest right now, there are some very nice games coming out in the next few months that have learned from the mistakes EQ has made. Dark age of Camelot, UO2 Origin, Anarchy Online, and Neverwinter Nights.

I'll bet some of you guys complaining about the $10/month pay ~$50/month for cable or satellite tv, right? Or rent movies from Blockbuster for $4 a pop? Go watch a movie at the theaters for $7 a ticket? The point is $10 is not that much to save up a month. Trust me and all the other fellow addicts out there (all 300,000 of them, by Sony's last count), it's going to be money pretty well spent. Besides, what's the longest you've ever played a game? I usually get bored of a $40 game after a month or so, at best. EQ comes with a free month of gametime, so you owe it to yourself to try it out.
