I deliver pizzas for a living in NE, and will only buy Japanese 4cyl 5-speed FWD vehicles. Right now I have an 88' Mazda MX6. Last car was an 84' Toyota camry.
I don't like auotomatics, hence the 5-speed, need FWD for the snow, 4cyl for gas mileage, and Japanese for reliability. I watch all these other guys at work who buy american cars break down all the time. When stuff needs to be done with my cars, it's usually regular maitnence, or you can tell it's srarting to go, before it breaks down. I've also been the only guy left on the road in heavy snow. Which means I make all the money, while having a blast doing e-brake slides around every corner.
As for ricing em out. If I didn't go through cars so quickly, or have a job that requires me to use my car. I would most likely own a Camaro/Firebird/Trans Am, or maybe even an older Mustang, because you can make em run faster for less IMO. All the stuff they sell for Japanese cars do not add much horsepower, unless you go crazy like supercharging. Just read some of the magazines. They'll spend like $1500 on an Acura, or a Honda and get maybe 20 horsepower. Spend $1500 on a Mustang in the right places, and you'll be making some serious power.
But overall for the average person who just wants a good car. I, as does my mechanic who owns a Honda (his wife has a Nissan), always recommend Toyota/Honda/Nissan. I like my Mazda, but doubt I'd buy another. I just couldn't pass up the deal I got.
A lot of those performance parts actually reduce your performance. For instance a big exhaust on your Toyota may add 5 horsepower at the upper end, but at the expense of throttle response.
I work with a guy who has the same car as me, only one year newer. He has an intake kit, and a cat back exhaust on his. They're both 5 speeds. We raced for a laugh, and of course I spanked his. Mine is all stock. Most cars run better stock, unless you do major mods to them.
I remember when a magazine called Cars (it's gone now

) bought a brand new 88' Mustang, and wanted to see what they could get it to run without modifying it with performance parts. Just good tuning, and playing with the suspension to get it to launch better. They had it running low-mid 13's in the quarter. Which is damn quick mind you. Everyone doubted them everywhere they took it, and they'd gladly let em search the car over looking for aftermarket stuff, but didn't find it.
Then after a few months they went on to the modification stages, and they began to run slower, until they spent a few grand that is. Then it was a terror. Now remember that this was 12 years ago, and since then they've come out with some seriuosly good parts for em (afternarket aluminum heads, superchargers, better cams, etc), but again without spending a lot. You risk hurting performance (not to mention your wallet) by modifying your car.
I regularly spnk modified cars. Lets face it. A Toyota Corolla is still a Toyota Corolla, and just putting a coffee can exhaust doesn't mean you can outrun something that was faster then it from the factory. Believe it, or not my car spanks Integra's, and Si's all the time, including a guy I work with who has a Civi Si. He'll get me at the top end, but from a dead stop, he's all done.
There was a guy who used to work with me who had a tricked out CRX that I couldn't even come close to touching. He had all the toys, even an aftermarket head, and ran low 13's. It was pretty funny spankin Stang's with it. I'll give him credit too. He bought most everything used, and had less then 4 G's into it. Not bad IMO. He now has a GTI VR6 that's all tricked out, and everytime I see him, he flys by me like I'm standing still.
I'd still rather have a V-8 to work with if I was gonna trick out a car myself though.
