Its reputation is that it smells bad. That reputation is richly deserved. If you can get passed the smell you'll find it tastes NOTHING like it smells. That doesn't mean you will like it but the reputation does come from the smell.

Nooooo. I can see why, the more you consume the less it tastes like a fruit bat pooped in your mouth, but no. Just way too strong a flavour for me.

Jackfruit on the other hand is nice. Nothing like some juicy custard apples though. Or lychees. Pity none of them are in season right now.

Durian doesn't taste as bad as it smells, but it doesn't taste good enough to make up for the way it smells.

durian is great! nothing like cracking open a fresh one and having the smell of a thousand bad farts hitting you simultaneously to let you know that yes, this thing is really freakin fresh! :) seriously though, if you don't want to smell it, pop it in the freezer a little bit till its a little frozen, then eat it. no smell and it tastes great. eating it fresh is the best though.

Like I said in my original post I actually sort of like durian, I just don't love it. The only part about it that gets to me sometimes is how rich is it, it's like eating a rich creamy custard. I'm sure I could get to love it very quickly.

Dude, the freezer is not going to help the smell.
Even when I buy frozen that comes in the clear box, once its openned, everyone can smell it.

no. i mean, it tasted good, but the bad outweighs the good (in that it smells pretty damn terrible) in this situation, so im over it. not to mention my best friend used to leave it out for days in his messy room, and it stank everything up even worse.

I imagine myself going on Fear Factors and they have us eating Durian in the challenge.
I would win by a mile. One of my favorite fruit.

BTW, did you know Durian is banned in all Singapore subways ??
That was a $500,000 question in "who wants to be a millionaire". And no he didn't get it.

It was like eating really smelly thick pudding :(

This was for a class I was in (Plants and Man at UW-Madison). Best class I've ever taken, but trying the durian fruit was probably the low point.

Never tried it, but the fact that it was part of a Fear Factor episode once doesn't make it sound any better.

If it smells like cat poop, it must taste like cat poop. And no, I will never eat it.
