Poll: Downloading TV shows..

I can understand shows that are on cable networks, but public broadcast? Isn't it the same as taping it with a VCR or TiVo? Regarding the commercials issue, doesn't everyone skip over them anyways?

I've read some sites that say yes it's legal, and others say no it's illegal (USA Today for one I believe).

Just wondering what you guys think. 😕

Beats me, but I just downloaded 3 episodes of the old-school Ninja Turtles to show my little brother what the show used to be like before it was raped by pop-culture and jizzed all over by the anime fanatics.

Downloading implies distribution. Taping/TIVOing does not.

Therefore downloading is illegal while taping/TIVOing is fair use.

Agreed.

The only TV show I download via torrent is Mystery Science Theater 3000, and the producers of that show specifically urged all MSTies to share their episodes, be they VHS, DVD, or online.

"Keep trading the tapes!"

How does downloading imply distribution?
What am I missing?

Whomever you are downloading it from is distributing it.

I suppose downloading implies that you are on the receiving end of distribution. While taping/TIVOing implies you are on the receiving end of OFFICIAL (read: legal) distribution.

I'm thinking bitTorrents. Downloading is only possible by uploading too. Brilliant design only if there are enough uploaders..

Anyways, with the same token, letting a friend borrow a tape you recorded the night before would be illegal too?

Thought it fell under fair use, so long as no money is being made from the distribution or showing of it.

Since after all, it's on the public airwaves.

Court really needs to rule against these Media Nazis

Technically, yes.

The distribution part is illegal. (presumably)

But, the original question: is it illegal to download? No. Probably illegal to upload, but not to download.
However, if using bittorrent, you're uploading as you download.
And, if you're using a hacked version so you don't have to share...
jerk.

I just recieved a letter from our ISP saying someone was d/ling Stargate off our connection. Lo and behold, my roomate was doing it. So I guess it is illegal. Actually went and looked up the Copyright Law, but I'm no lawyer (I do watch plenty of Law and Order though). It plays something to the tune of: The copyright owner has sole distribution rights tot he work. There we go.

Depends on where you live. But, yeah, for most of us it would be illegal. But I don't give a fvck. I use bittorrent now like I used to use my VCR.
