Man, I don't know how anyone can think Doom 3 is better than Doom or Doom 2. It does play completely different from the first two (and Final Doom), so I guess there's that. More survival horror than run and gun, I guess.

Doom 1 and 2. Still have DOS versions. Good thing those WADs can be used with emulators like Doom Legacy Project.

Doom 2016 is also great. IMO, worthy sorceress to original classics.

For me, it's Doom 2, DOOM (2016), Doom 3/RoE

I chose doom 2016 but i liked doom 3 a lot more when it comes to the environment and the ambiance. It was more scary and i was really desperate to survive. Every time i heard those hell spells, i was fully on edge to attack. Hairs in the back of my neck raising up. If i get such a thrill in a game, then that game is great for me. With doom 2016 i just came in the game ready to open a can of whoopass. Doom2016 looks fantastic, but it was more of a game like the first 8 bit doom. Just guns blazing...

The first time I played Doom 3, I had just gotten home from work at 8am (worked graves from 7pm-8am), had my blackout curtains closed, my headphones on, and after turning on the signal and heading back to the main base, I remember cowering under that one stairway freaking out listening to the marines on the radio dying - and then hearing the Imp hissing nearby. It took me 20 minutes of psyching up to get out from under those stairs and keep playing, lol.

Exaclty the thrill that is great. :)
And that is what i have been missing with doom2016 and wolfenstein new order, old blood and new colossus.
The original "return to castle Wolfenstein" from 2001 also had that ambiance.
I miss that with the current generation of idtech5 / 6 based games.
It is just provokation by showing some nude figures and swearing.
It as if these guys need a real writer and director to help create a good plot.
It is the same difference between the latest startrek movies and the older star trek movies.
I guess i am getting old...

Easy. I never played the first two games when they were new. By the time I got around to playing them after playing Doom 3, I couldn't stand them. Sure they were revolutionary for their time, but they didn't stand up to the test of time.

I used to play Doom 3 in my bedroom with my 5.1 sound system at 1:00 AM and being the only person in the house. It would creep me out so much I had trouble sleeping.

:)

I had my consoles routed into my 2.1 sound system. It was a Wal-Mart system, but it was incredible for bass which Doom 3 had plenty of.

I still have that system but I use it for working out in my garage now and it still sounds great.

Doom 1, or 2, or Plutonia, doesn't matter, as long as you use Brutal Doom.

if you don't know what brutal doom is, youtube it. changes the whole experience.
