Yes, he's said some unfortunate things. He's even regretted a few of them. But Bill suffers more from the simple fact that Americans either don't understand or don't appreciate satire. Americans have developed a strong sence of patriotism, but have such a poor sense of satire that they think every satiracle reference is a punishable offense.
Lighten up! For excellent satire, look at the Brits. Not too closely though - they have really bad teeth.
