Usually do when putting together whole computer but not when just upgrading vid card, hd, etc....

no...never killed a component either...i usually touch some metal before workin on one...and i dont have any carpet

This is a pointless thread... I have never worn one, neither has my dad, who has been struck by lightning. I've seen him use PCI cards like they're plug and play, he's removed them and put them back in while the computer is still on :p

For normal builds, no, for big server builds (10k+ in hardware) yeah I'll use an anti-static strap.

I do, I figure why not? Besides from the stuff I read they recommend you get used to wearing one just in case you get a tech job that requires you to wear one, this way your used to it.

I touched a component on my dialup modem while the phone line was still plugged in, and that actually was enough to send current through my hand. Other than... no. I always unplug the power cord and hold the power button in to discharge the capacitors though.
