POLL: Do you use your DVD burner as your DVD ROM also ?

When DVD burners were still "expensive", it was commonly thought that you should "save it" by using a DVD ROM drive to do everything else (aside from burning discs). Is it still the same mindset nowadays ?

I use my DVD burner to read discs... but it's only because I used up all 4 of my IDE "slots"... I have a DVDROM just sitting here unused and I am too lazy to buy/install an IDE controller... (until this thread... recommend one if you care to). The reason I still want to use the DVDROM is because it's slot-load and it's got a faster read speed.

My friend said keep the DVD Rom and preserve the DVD+RW lenses

DVD burners are cheap now... and I don't think it makes much of a difference

I used to think the same way too. Then the prices dropped and I don't care anymore. My DVD burner functions with everything that involves discs.

Seperate. My NEC 3540 is very loud when reading discs, though silent when burning. Plus it looks cooler having two drives.😱

I only have one drive installed.
Plus it's only a 4x drive, so if it dies I can pick up a shiny 16x drive for peanuts in comparison to its price when new.

i still have a pioneer slot load dvd rom in my computer...and a lite on 52x cd burner, no dvd capabilities yet! prolly will order the nec 3550A in silver at the egg soon.

Single DVD write (NEC ND-3520A) because they're cheap enough $40 and I don't rip discs every day, so if it does go bad I'll just get a new one.

exact same reason. the nec drives are a beast when it spins

My crappy Samsung DVD-ROM (God, why do I always get lumbered with Samsung crap?) is dying; emits a rattling noise when a disc has been spinning for over a few minutes.
Sadly, the Pioneer DVR-105 has virtually kicked the bucket, and refuses to burn a disc that doesn't have reading errors at certain points. Pioneer 110D 11-in-1 turning up tomorrow 😀

So yeah, one DVD-ROM, one DVD-RW.

DVD burners are pretty much disposable now (what are they, like $40?), no point to "saving it." I have two burners in my computer, I use whichever one doesn't have a disc in it at the time for reading.

Wow, not a single vote for "Don't have a DVD ROM / Writer". Of course, I guess this IS a tech forum, after all.

My main PC has a CD-ROM, a CD-RW, a DVD-ROM, and will soon have a DVD-RW.

I also have this setup and am wanting to add a DVD-RW. Mine are all SCSI and my 4th bay has my case fan rheostats.

So if I add a DVD-RW I will have to either pitch the DVD-Rom which is a Pioneer 303s region free slot load or the CD-Rom which is a Plextor UltraPlex 40Max which rules for ripping.

like the best dvd writer is $40 bucks. the average non techy can afford that.
