I always used a POP account that I could view online but then always downlaoded everything at home. Now I'm transitioning everything to my Gmail account. I know Gmail has POP ability but now I'm thinking I might never have a need to do that since I can view it from anywhere....

Just wondering what everyone else does.

My ISP email address is known mostly by friends.

My other folks go to one of two web mail accounts.

Gmail has the ability, as do most webmail providers, to retain all email even if you download it locally. So I download it locally to my home machine, but I still have a copy left on Gmail.

Since Hotmail and Yahoo both stopped allowing POP3 on their free email accounts, I've had to do it web-based.

Ditto, except that since my school blocks POP3, I have to download them in giant bulk when I'm home. Oh well.

I am the only "something else".

I use IMAP to view my mail how ever I'd like. Honestly, I don't understand how people (who want to do e-mail from more than one computer) can stand to use POP3.

I can use ANY client I wish from anywhere to check the same mailbox. Away from home? I can use webmail or SSH in and use pine. One of my computers? I can use Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, webmail or SSH in.

Easy.

webmail + imap FTW. bhanson, I'm with you.. unless your pop3 client always leaves it on the server... but then again, most ppl don't use email as something extremely vital.

I use both my ISP's e-mail......(adelphia)........but I LEAVE it on their server. I haven't had any reason to d/l e-mail for about 2 years now. I hate d/l'ing e-mail.

#1.) It means I have to use OE & I don't want to open another program to read mail.

#2.) It means I have to store e-mail I don't want to, so I let them store it.

I also use my Gmail account regularly & I don't know if there'll ever be a reason to d/l that mail. I wish I could **read** my Gmail in SodaPop via my cell phone, but when I enter the pop addy & my user/pw it just doesn't work. Hotmail does & my adelphia e-mail does, but not Gmail.

???

I use IMAP for my mail server - I use thunderbird at home but I can access all of my mail through webmail from other computers.

Gmail doesn't support IMAP, right? I almost always check my mail from my desktop, so POP3 is fine. And even if I were to check it from multiple locations, all you'd have to do is use the Gmail interface, and then the next time you use Outlook at home, it'll download anything that hasn't been downloaded yet. Easy enough.

I keep everything accessible from everywhere... keep it on the web as their respective GUIs are fine. No POP downloading for me.

Ooooooh.......the grand nagus cuuuuuuuuuuuuussed!! ;)

Question about IMAP...................(since I've been under a rock lately?)........

WTF is it???

I went to imap.org, but I don't get how it works. Is it a program???

(My ISP allows me to leave mail on their server. My hotmail account does the same. And my Gmail account does the same. So why would anyone need IMAP????)
