I went to imap.org, but I don't get how it works. Is it a program???

(My ISP allows me to leave mail on their server. My hotmail account does the same. And my Gmail account does the same. So why would anyone need IMAP????)

Since something like gmail and a regular ISP e-mail account work a little differently, how do you use IMAP??

i use gmail pop but whats annoying is when i send and email from outlook the email does go out but i also get it in my inbox.

Outlook checks it every few minutes via IMAP however I can access it through webmail anytime.

create a filter... for mails originating from your own address (sent by your own client)... have it labeled as 'outgoing' and archive... = win

Ignore the guy who said it's used for outgoing mail, he's clueless

The purpose of IMAP is it syncronizes your inbox between your home computer and your mail box on a server. All that is stored locally (usually) is the email headers, when you click on an email that email is fetched from the server. When you move an email between folders you are actually telling the server to move an email between folders. That way in webmail the email will be in the same place that you put it. Read states (read/unread) are also stored, so read and unread messages will look the same in mail clients and webmail.

In the end, it's very convenient if you have to access your mail from many different places and you want your inboxes to look the same everywhere. Most ISPs support it, just like they support POP3, and just about every hosting services does.

TOO GOOD is subjective.. heh. If they support multiple identies properly and imap.. then I'll start using it. As of now, say mail from me@comcast.net is forwarded to me@gmail.com ... i want gmail to use me@comcast.net as the reply address if I replied to the original email. like how fastmail.fm does it or thunderbird...

if there is a fix i would like to know. i posted a thread about this several months ago and there are other poeople having the same issue.
