i like cloth mousepads because they keep the feet of my mouse nice and clean... on a hard surface they tend to pick up all kinds of gunk and i have to clean them regularly

Most definetely. I have the Ratpadz with my mx510 and its absolutely essential for gaming.

Try awp'ing with your mx510 in CS:Source without a pad, and then try it with a good pad like the Ratpadz. I can flick my wrist and BAM - one hit kills everytime.

On a side note, are they any mousepads that are clear or relatively clear?

I have an Alienware mousepad, it's pretty nice. Has a clip to hold my cable so it doesn't snag anywhere.

Yes, of course. My fUnc sUrface 1030 is infinitely smoother than my desk, it also provides 2 different textures for better feedback.

Yes, because there's a seam on my desk right where my mouse is, which sucks.

Yes at home 'cuz it doesn't track too well on my white desktop without it.

No at work because it tracks just fine on my desktop here (fine-grain pattern in the laminate).
