Poll: Do you think marijuana will be legalized in the near future?

I've been hearing a lot of talk recently about the possible legalization of weed, for the most part quite a few people seem to be in favor of it. On the other hand there are some people who are really adamant about it remaining an illegal substance. So what do you think the odds are of it becoming a legal but controlled product? What kind of profits could be made from it?

I was thinking that from a medical perspective it could be a cash cow. Instead of doctors prescribing addictive narcotics as pain remedies, marijuana could be a viable alternative without the risk of addiction and overdosage. Also considering the wide number of people who already use it across various economic backgrounds and social circles (entertainers, athletes, college students, etc..) making it legal seems like a potential gold mine of revenue.

i think its fairly likely in the next 10 years, although i don't think it will be prescribed much medically.

I was thinking it could possibly become legal before then. Considering the enormous national debt and the current economic crisis, I can see a lot of politicians who normally would be against weed voting in favor of it for the economic benefits.

'in the next ten years' would include tomorrow, for instance

Once the DEA has an item on its list, you honestly think they'll ever give it up?

Riiiight...

Now, that said, there would be tremendous monetary benefits to legalizing it. Many, many thousands of citizens currently overcrowding the prisons could be released, relaxing both the strained conditions as well as the budgets required to maintain them as useless drag on society. In addition, these released citizens would be come productive taxpayers. And we could realize a pretty nice tax revenue on pot cigarettes (I mean, we charge >$6/pack in parts of the country now for normal tobacco sticks, why not that much or more for wacky tobacky sticks?).

Treat it just like alcohol - restricted access to 21+ and if you're caught driving after smoking you get a DUI.

I want to see the brands that come out.

IMO it's likely to be eventually used as a revenue stream like tobacco. The only reason it's not legalized is because alcohol/tobacco companies lobby against it. The majority of people want to get high, but also want to be law-abiding citizens. So people like Sao123 get to push their morality on others, demonizing the plant and "dopers".

Too many people who matter are making a lot of money off it being illegal.

Pol: I am introducing a bill to legalize pot.
Other Pol: YOU ARE PISSING ON THE GRAVES OF EVERY COP KILLED IN THE DRUG WAR!!
Contract Prison Operator: Thanks man, here's $10k for your next campaign. We're good for at least five more years.

No, it will never be. I used to be young and dumb (back in my smoke a 1/2 ounce - ounce a week days) and it made total sense dude.

Just like making your own acid, shrooms, or any other controlled substance will never be legal. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Well, they just made salvia divinorum a felony to sell in my state because one of the state senators saw videos of kids smoking it on YouTube. So it doesn't look good from here.

been decriminalized in MA if you have less than a half pound.

Yep. My state's become less gay. Paraphernalia is still a misdemeanor though, so I'll be throwing my stuff away if I get chased.

Decriminalized yes, but full on legal and commercialized...no?

I agree vi edit; I don't foresee the day where I can go into my local convince store and buy a joint... unless after being legalized, MJ producers meet the same "packaging requirements" as any other smoke-able substance here in the US, which... well...

You're a little delusional there.

Not really. Most people want to have some fun. Getting high could mean having a glass of scotch after work. Most people DON'T want the government telling them what they can and can't do with their own bodies.

There are a lot more law-abiding adults who smoke weed than you might think.

Maybe, but there also a heck of a lot of people who enjoy telling other people what to do/not do with their bodies. Add ignorance, pettiness, and stupidity into the mix and you get prohibition.

I personally feel that "getting high" and "getting a buzz" are two different things ConstipatedVigilante; if I am wrong, please educate me. 😱
