Another thread asked for some advice about anti-depressants and many people responded w/ advice.

Is America really that depressed? Are Dr.'s prescribing it unnecessarily? Is it just technically inclined people that tend to get depressed?

I've never been on them but the number of posters in that thread got me curious.

Where's the "I find this thread very depressing" option? ;)

Serious answer: I think it's partially that depression is more recognized as a real "disease" (for lack of a better term), that people tend to stress themselves out with "modern life" (leading to depression) and that being sedentary exacerbates the overall problem. The last bit is a semi-anecdotal theory of mine. I have had on/off issues with depression most of my life and I know that a little exercise (and the ensuing endorphin kick) goes a very long way toward evening out my mood swings. I hate the idea of taking medication to feel normal, so this is my way of dealing and it works for me.

I hate that its called "Depression".. It implies that I always am depressed and wanna kill myself which is far from the truth. I have never wanted to die or anything of the sort. I do however feel distant and detached when I'm not on meds. DO you know how you feel when you haven't slept for a couple days? Thats what depression is to me. Not the helpless, unhappy person always portrayed..

As I stated in the other thread, I've been taking Wellbutrin for over a year now. It helps me a lot. If I'm off my Wellbutrin for a while, I get really moody and just unhappy in general. Not much interests me and work just gets unbearable.

Haven't taken any.

Whenever I feel depressed I just cut myself or drink alot, then I feel better. no need for anti-depressants.

The feeling I get when I haven't slept for days is called sleepy and tired -- not depression. Depression, to me, means feeling sad and hopeless.

You do feel "sad" to an extent (at least I do) but he's right about the detached from reality thing as well. Nothing's funny. Nothing's interesting. Everything just....is. It sucks.

Are you serious about cutting yourself? I have a friend who does the same thing... She has never given me a good reason why she does it. I think she feels she "deserves" it. Of course she feels like she derserves every bad thing that happens to her because everything is her fault. She is probably one of the sweetest, nicest women I know, too. It makes me sad.

Yeah, I understand about the "detached" feeling. You don't enjoy the things that used to make you happy.

Has anyone actually noticed an effect from this? Before I got on Wellbutrin, I took SJW for a little while and noticed maybe a slight lightening of my mood, but it could have been a placebo effect for all I know.

IIRC, SJW was pretty much disproven as effective therapy for depression recently.

That's what I am talking about. Once someone heres depressed they think of sadness and hopeless which isn't what I and many feel.

That is so right about feeling nothing.. I once sat a few feet away from a baby that was chocking on a piece of pizza. I just sat there watching the mother and father try franticly to remove the pizza from its throat. I felt nothing, no sadness for the parents, not worry for the kid. I just sat there thinking "huh, look at that. a kid chocking".. Two days later I ordered some paxil from a company in Mexico and received them 1 week later. Been on them since..

wow, I never knew that... I "don't feel" that quite often. Not going to start taking any meds for it, but I have a new understanding... My fiance has said in the past that sometimes I seem distant and disconnected from her, and at those times, I'm just not feeling much of anything at all. I wonder if that's what it could be... very interesting indeed

Hey ILikeStuff, you are probably like I was. Hearing the word depression flipped me out making me think of something that wasn't true. Do some research if your concerned about it. It improved my life greatly. I still haven't told a single person I know yet. I feel most people couldn't even understand if I explained it to them so I don't bother..

I'm kind of like that. Once when I was helping out at my parent's restaurant a lady said I was the coldest person she ever encountered (basically because I didn't display any emotion when she was complaining about something).
