<< "We defends the rights of these people so that when a Martin Luther King Jr. or Ghandi needs those same rights, they will be there." >>

One of my chief complaints is that there are many more cases in the US far more deserving of legal representation than their current slate of clients. They are out for publicity just as much, if not more, as they are out for "justice".

<< They are trying to defend the constitution and the rights that it gives us. >>

Uh huh. Let's see what many of their lawyers have to say about the Second Amendment and see how long the "we're just protecting the Constitution" argument holds.

So would you guys rather not have the ACLU? What's the alternative, that's my question. They're doing something for free that a lot of lawyers wouldn't want to touch with a ten foot pole. Yes there are some zealous members but don't hold the whole organization responsible for the actions of the few. You can always find some wackos in any organization. As far as them taking the wrong cases, the real problem is that the press doesn't cover the normal cases of the ACLU helping out normal people. They always choose to cover the neo nazis and child pornographers. Just cause that's all you see on the television, don't think that that's all they stand for or defend. I would like to see some examples of the ACLU walking away from a case because it wouldn't provide enough media coverage.

Somehow I think the country would function quite well without them.
