I don't. Although I am all for technology and such, our gov't has shown that it will abuse any power trusted to it. Back when social security was implemented, they said that the number would ONLY be used for this benefit. Now look. Why should a bank need to know my social security number? Bad idea...
 
Personally, I'm for it. I love accountability, and that is one thing this country is in serious need of.
 
In principle: yes. In practice: no. Way, way too much potential for abuse by the gov and probably by advertisers/marketers/insurers/etc.

And the problem with Illegal Aliens getting drivers liscenses is astounding. If this would help, I'm all for it.

The Federal government has access to some secret method of verifying identities that the states do not? We have bigger problems than illegal aliens getting drivers licenses IMHO. The Feds are the ones that replied to the dead hijackers visa request 6 months after they were dead so why exactly should I trust them anymore than my state regarding identification?
 
I'm planning on buying a car soon and I want it to be a fast one...I plan on breaking all sorts of laws and when I get pulled over by the cops, I'd prefer that they don't know who I am. Therefore, I am against any forms of ID (and police for that matter)

Oh wait, personal responsibility is a good thing...

This is an iffy subject to me. The check system that would be in place on this card would have to be tremendous if I was to support it.

If cops had pulled me over, I'd only want then to have limited access to ONLY the information they needed. I don't think they need to know about my credit history or financial standings.

Like stated previously, good in principle, but nearly impossible to implement in practice the right way.

Personal responsibility is what would prevent you from doing the above mentioned acts, not the technical sophistication of your driver's license. There is nothing in the Constitution that requires a law abiding citizen to carry documentation papers when going about their lawful business. Driving is a different thing altogether since it is said to be a priviledge not a right.

Those billions are not lost because there is no national identification system they are lost because these states choose or in some cases are required to provide support services for these illegal people. Do you really think a national ID card will solve the illegal immigration problem? How exactly does a national ID card stop the body brokers from sneaking in illegal immigrants and the willing employers that turn the other way while hiring them?

Medicare is only part of the problem. Taxes are not being collected as well and that is a huge loss. And yes I do think a national id is going to be better than a driver's liscense because it moves the security from the state to the federal level.

You keep ignoring the question I asked from the outset. How exactly will it help? Since the last immigration reform was passed in the 1980's I have had to show a birth certificate and another form of identification when filling out new hire paperwork. It is actually more difficult for me to meet this requirement than it is for my Canadian born wife because she has a green card. Generally a drivers license does not identify you as being eligible for anything other than operating a motor vehicle. It is a convenient form of identification for banking transactions and the like because it generally has a photo as well as a signature on it. For some reason you seem to think that in this one area there is a magic bullet to cure a problem as old as the republic itself. Even with a national ID card there will still be people willing to employ illegal aliens and illegal aliens willing to perform work for pay no legal citizen would consider.
