I leave mine on 24-7.

I agree with your friend that standby (and hibernation also) is a BAD IDEA. Lots of programs have time-based delays in them, especially stuff that connects to networks (or the internet) to poll for changes, keep connections alive, etc. and is likely to get confused and crash if you use standby or hibernation. I also wouldn't trust a standby or hibernation mode to properly trigger things like purging the write buffer to disk for a UDF (DirectCD) CD before going to sleep.

Plus with the general crappiness of Windows NetBIOS/Samba code I wouldn't be surprised if putting your machine to sleep causes other machines that were sharing files to it or from it to freeze up for awhile.

I use standby during the day when my computer's not being used and I shut it down at night.

My MP3 (WinXP) server stays up 24/7 so I can stream files from work. The Win2K-side of my dual-Athlon box doesn't handle hibernate well (LAN problems, typically); otherwise I'd use it. Granted, XP boots so fast, it's almost pointles to use standby or hibernate. I just need a legit copy of XP ...

24/7

here is another question

what's your longest uptime for a computer you actively use? Surf, game and all?

Mine is 21 days.

This guy who runs just an ftp server was up to 4 months.

Stanford Folding@Home estimates $6/month tops.

I leave my machines running 24/7. Both are running a Folding client set to use 100% of available cpu cycles. Both seem quite happy.

Actually, I'm concerned with power usage. I shut down the computer at night simply because it's in my bedroom and the noise would bug me. When I get around to it I'm installing components I've already got to quieten it down but it still won't be what I want in my bedroom. If I have stuff open I want to see when I next turn it on, I hibernate. Never had a problem with it, but you have to remember NOT to change your hardware when hibernating or you might have some rude surprises (I'm told). Sometimes I hibernate during the day. If I'm returning to the box in an hour or two, I might just turn off the monitor. In any case, when I walk alway from the box for what I think will be more than 5 minutes, I turn down the brightness with my neato thumbwheel. I figure that extends the life of my FAB monitor. Ya gotta love your monitor.

I have a gizmo I made that measures the power used by whatever. I've tested everything I care about and I figured out that my computer uses around 80 watts when on exclusive of the monitor. The monitor doubles the power usage. If I leave the monitor switch on, but the computer is off, it draws maybe 2-5 watts. I used to leave it on ALL the time, but now I shut it off. I know people say my HDs will last longer if I don't turn them on and off, but I've never lost a HD. I've always replaced them with bigger ones before failure... so far. If you leave your HDs on 24/7 I think you should affirm with your HD manufacturer that they were designed to be used 24/7. I heard that the IBM 120 GXPs aren't really designed for 24/7.

Leave them running. And processing SETI 24/7. Turn your monitors off, and join one of AT's DP teams:)

NO wonder the USA consumes the most electricity in the world.
so many of you are leaving computers on 24/7 when it is not nesscary...

I hope all of you realized that most electricity that is generated through coal burning, which is extremlly harmful to the enviroment

please converve enery

btw, i find the idea of seti@home to be absurd. Searching for aliens? simply ludicrus..

I turn mine off each time i'm DONE USING IT. I turn it on/off probably 3-4 times a day during the weekend and once or twice on the weekday because of school

I leave mine on 24/7 except for my montior. The most wear and tear caused to a computer is during start up and shut down.

I leave my systems on 24/7 for the above reason.

I use "standby" in Win XP. I have the BIOS set to " S3-suspend to ram" so when I "standby" in XP my machine seems completely off but a touch of the spacebar and I'm right back to my desktop.

Does anyone know how many watts are being drawn in a Suspend to RAM mode? Say your monitor is off or drawing under 5 watts in suspend mode...
