Poll - Do you remove those security devices in DVD's?

I do. They bug me. I call 'em slugs, and I dispose of them when I find them in my DVD cases and my garden. What do you do?

what are those devices again? I couldn't get you? What do they look like and what is their purpose

They're usually black or brown, sometimes white, about 1 3/4 inch long, about 3/8 inch high and less than a 1/16th inch thick and they are sticky backed, like velcro. They are "security devices" and are embedded with something that resonates with a device in a store and sends back a signal that sets off an alarm. It's obviously to prevent shoplifting. I don't really know how they work. Maybe they are deactivated at the cash register. Does anybody know? I get most of my DVD's online, and it seems like at least half of them have one of these. I don't know if they've been "activated", what activation would mean... like I say, I'm not aware of the precise technology.

Yes thats how they work. If you ever notice a cashier rubbing the box against the counter or a pad, they are deactivating the said security devices.

yes. If they didn't come off so easily though I would just leave them. I'm not bothered that much by their presence

I always take them off before I stuff them in my coat. I hate those damn security buzzers going off at Borders all the time.

it's even more fun to take them off and put them in someone else's coat pocket/hood/purse/bag. Hilarity ensues.

if i'm not mistaken, it's all magnetics. if you open one of them, you'll notice there's a very thin layer that's charged up and it's covered by a thicker layer of plastic and that's wrapped inside what you see from the outside with the glue. they're actually pretty sensitive, simply folding one ruins it.
(these are just my observations from my years as a cashier when I had much time with nothing to do....)

I've done that before...🙂 On a side note, I hate it when people yell at their wife and act like a total asshole at borders. :|

I've got a bad habit of doing that to co-workers at Home Depot

That's a really good site and good treatment of the subject - rather thorough. It's actually pretty ingenious if it does what it's supposed to. I don't know how effective it is in the case of DVD's. Theoretically, it would seem to be virtually foolproof, but the site says the basic technology is 60% effective, so maybe it doesn't work as you'd think.
