POLL: Do you 'polish' apples before eating them?

I generally rinse off produce before eating it but as Amused pointed out it is probably not necessary. Just one of those things my parents always did and imprinted on us to do.

I am pretty sure the pesticide theory is an urban myth. I'm even more convinced after googling. However, the need to rinse produce is not an urban myth...

They add wax to seal in moisture, and I am fairly certain this isn't done at the grocery store. I think they just spray it with water there.

Not exactly. Only that it is necessary to try to wash the pesticide residue off. After reading, it seems like about 80% of produce has no pesticide residue at all. And the rest has such minimal amounts that it well exceeds any health standards. I'm also not sure it really washes them off anyway. Some sites claim you have to use detergent, while other sites explicitly state to not use detergent because it can be absorbed.

um.. call me crazy, i actually use the back side of a knife to scrape off all the wax.

it's just habit, so I don't find it annoying, which I could imagine other would.

This isn't so much for the Apples benefit as much as it's for the shirt....

There is NOTHING out there that will help preserve a shirts longevity as having waxed it with parafin from an apple. I have tried candle wax and pear wax, but always find myself coming back to apples.

I will NEVER give up my 20 yr old high school t-shirt. They just don't make them that way anymore....
