POLL: Do you place table tennis?

i think so. The question is, would do most states not consider it as high school/college sport?

edit: Do you play table tennis?

There are lots of sports not offered at high schools/colleges.

But obviously its a sport.

If golf is a sport, then table tennis is a god damn sport. In fact, if golf is a sport then so is eating potato chips on the couch.

"Obviously you're not a golfer"

That is a horribly ignorant statement.

It's always funny how its the people who can't play golf that criticize it the most.

I have 2 rules for something to be a sport:

1) It is an athletic competition (table tennis is, so is golf (walking 18 holes of competitive golf is tiring))
2) It is a direct competition between 2 or more individuals or teams, without being judged by a 3rd party. (this rules out arbitrary decisions by judges deciding results.)

So, in my opinion, thing like gymnastics, and figure skating are not sports. In hockey, you don't get style points for how pretty your goal was. If your feet weren't perfectly together, it still counts as a goal.

So yes, table tennis is a sport. So is golf.

In my opinion anyways

Great explanation! I completely agree with you.

so is a LAN party a sport?
is playing CS for 14 hours a sport? that mousing finger might get a little tired, so would your eyes.

I hope you mean judged as to who the winner is, and not subject to subjective judgement calls during the sport, otherwise most sports do not qualify as sports.

I guess it also means that you do not think boxing, most martial arts, etc. are sports.

Yet by your definition speed chess is a sport.

3) Event must not *necessarily* rely on electricity to take place. So Hockey would remain a sport seeing as you can play it on a frozen pond, but CS is not.

That is the worst qualification of a sport I have ever heard. I don't have a better one, but the exclusion of gymnastics in favor of golf because you have to walk is preposterous.

Since you're named after a great philosopher lets hear your definition.

Well, I tend to fllow more of Popper than Descartes in deriving meaning in a logical positivist manner; so I think the definition of sport is sufficient.

Who the hell walks all 18 holes? The guys on TV, the pros, obviously don't. And so the non-competitive part is more athletic than the competitive part? WTF?

If you are good at table tennis, its acutally a very active sport, a good table tennis match will leave both player exhausted for breath.
If you suck at it, of course it wont be very exciting cuz you cant even move quick enough to hit the ball back, and you aint good enough to produce a rally which can be very tiring.

WHAT? Of course they walk all 18 holes. There is a now famous case about this wherein a pro sued the PGA so that they would allow him to use a golf cart due to a back problem. It went all the way to the supreme court.

Secondly, the act of physically swinging a driver and making the ball go relatively straight for hundreds of feet is certainly a physical exertion. Imagine having to do that 18 times per day, then having to do a similar motion 60+ times per day on top of the "walking". Finally, some times you have to play 36 holes in one day due to "rain delay" type stuff.

The dictionary definition of a sport covers pretty much ANY game. Thus according to the dictionary, table tennis is a sport.

My personal definition of a sport is any competition which is intensely physical.

For most table tennis players, it isn't intensely physical and thus to me it isn't a sport. The top pros are a different story though.

Examples of MY definition:
[*] Lobbing a tennis ball casually back and forth isn't a sport. Wimbelton is a sport.
[*] Playing horse with a friend isn't a sport. The NBA is a sport.
[*] Miniture golf isn't a sport. Golf is barely a sport.

it def is a sport, and many colleges offer it as a sport. There are professional teams which compete. It is def a sport!
