i was set on nalgene but i played with the siggs at copelands. with all the controvesy around the potential leaching of chemicals from the plastics that naglene uses, i'm thinking of going aluminum. super light and very sexy and still recyclable. can anybody comment? should i just get a stainless steel thermos for all-purpose use?

dunno where the sudden interest in water bottles came from. :p

Single-use water bottles (the type bottled water is sold in) made from polyethylene terephthalate, "#1 PET" or "PETE" are not recommended for repeat use, as a study found they may leach a carcinogenic substance known as DEHA.

Tests show that this is the only bottle [sigg] with an inner coating resistant to fruit acids and isotonic drinks. Swiss high-tech production at work again.

screw it, this is pissing me off.

How easily will the aluminum dent/scratch?

This sux, I just got one (nalgene) and its a great bottle, doesn't leak. I would guess stainless steel is better than aluminum but I don't know for sure.

ok im gonna finish checking out the site first...but look at the 'how its made' section.

the bottle interior is now sprayed with a taste-inert, food-compatible stove enamel which is baked on

meaning its not some chemical coating, more like pottery...i think

when i held it yesterday, it seemed very strong. like a soda can on steriods.

Ummm....

I have a question.

What exactly prevents this DEHA from leaching before "reuse"?....

That's exactly what I was wondering after reading that statement.

i own and use a couple of sigg bottles. they are great for what they are. after a few yeard, they will end up scratched and dented a bit but they still work great. they are great for red wine when you are going backpacking...

Stop drinking milk. It's bad for you. And so is tap water. And so is bottled water because of natural pollutants. I use single use bottles all the time for water and I will continue to do so without any second thought about that silly junk about leaching crap into my water.

Probably working and not making ridiculous statements about leaching chemcials into single-use bottles.

If you want the aluminum buy it. If you want to use the nalgene, buy it. You're obviously very concerned about a $10-20 bottle. Just buy the darn thing!

Unless it's got an insulated/vacuum wall you can forget about it working for hot/cold, unless you plan on drinking it right away. Aluminum sucks for insulation.

I'd imagine those aluminum bottles are much harder to clean than the wide mouths varieties

fyi skorb, the thermoses are not made from aluminum but standard stainless steel with a double wall vacuum.

the nissan thermoses are made in china cause my gf bought one for herself. i'd rather have that money going into a finely crafted swiss product .

and yea, at high temps, the aluminum bottles will leak a bit of aluminum (as tested by a german consumer group). is it significant? probably not. it's probably better for you than bisphenol A.

Treat your SIGG bottle to Bottle Clean, a sodium bicarbonate-based cleaner that will keep your bottle both fresh and clean. Simply drop a tablet into your drink bottle. Bottle clean is biodegradable. 20 tablets.

for $8 you get 20 tablets of baking soda?

they are, and they work fine. i'll just say that i'd prefer to have the money going into switzerland than china and leaving it at that. don't feel like getting political in OT.

if you're looking for a thermos, get a stanley. I've had one for hunting for 13 years now and it's fantastic. just like new. coffee is still warm 15 hours later sitting in below freezing temperatures.
