It should be edited to say PVR.

I definitely watch more TV, but not as much at once because I get to watch things on my on terms and I don't have many long blocks of time to watch shows one right after the other.

fair enough. i have owned a replay since august 2001. the total amount of tv i watch peaked this spring, but slowly declined. since september, i have watched much less tv than normal. at one point i had 3 new west wing episodes, 2 csi episodes, 2 law & orders, 1 john doe, and a lot of other stuff i just didn't feel like watching, even though i enjoy all of those shows. it's probably just because i have more to do now i don't watch as much tv, but being able to watch a show whenever i want has indirectly resulted in watching less tv.

We'll have our battle and I'll win, so how about we forgo the battle and just declare me victorious?

I think the battle belongs on the Tivo Community forums or somewhere else. Then again, they're tired of the replay VS tivo thing, too.

I just want to see how much more/less TV people watch after getting a PVR :p

you do understand that i'm on your side, right? and what i'm saying is to not turn every pvr-related thread into a replaytv vs tivo flamewar?

Less time spent in front of the TV, more time spent watching the shows I want to watch ... =)

Oops I did not know that, jumped the gun.

I want what I want, when I want.

To each his own. I prefer Tivo over ReplayTV.

Back to the question at hand.

I think I watch more TV, but rarely watch a show live. The few times I watch live tv I find myself getting disappointed because I can't fast forward through commercials.

That's another good poll subject: do you watch live tv any more because of your PVR? :)

I have a Tivo and actually watch less TV because of it. I never channel surf for hours anymore....I just check out what Tivo recorded for me.

I love my Tivo. And for all the PVR doubters out there. Try one for a week, you'll love it.

actually, sometimes. when the tv is just on in the background, like when i'm cooking, sure. or when i'm recording one thing but watching something else that's on at the same time because i don't want to wait to download it from someone else, then yes. but i never turn on the tv just to "see what's on." i'll sit down, watch a show or two i want to watch, and then leave. tv has become just another amusement, rather than something to do for a night. channel surfing is barely a memory.

I do not own one, but my aikido teacher swears by his tivo. Basically he said it has increased his enjoyment of tv since purchasing one. For me, I do not know. There are only a handful of programs that I watch and it is really no biggie if I miss it. And right now the only show that I have found myself making sure I watch is boomtown.

But does your Tivo think you are gay?

From King of Queens a few weeks ago, Spence got a TiVo and was showing this girl how it records shows based on his likes and dislikes. TiVo was recording a bunch of gay shows such as "Queer as Folk", "Priscilla Queen of the Desert", etc. His quote was "My TiVo thinks I'm gay!".

Although, based on the comments of my friends with TiVos, you can easily get it to record massive amounts of stuff on its own through the use of recommendations and season passes (which are great for picking up episodes of your favorite syndicated series). Of course, it probably doesn't help that they all hacked their units with 80GB hard drives.

ok I found out that "tivo" is just a VCR that uses a HD instead of videotape, but whats the big deal about a VCR??? enlighten me

and what is PVR?

and isnt that recording on HD business doable with my simple TV card ->capture?.....

and who watches TV anyway - maybe thats why I dont have a TV - just a TV card

A VCR is nothing compared to a PVR. I have one and i love it to death. I can have it record a show even if it switches timeslots, I can record 2 shows at once, I can store 30 hours of video without worrying about swapping tapes in and out. I've only ever had 11 hours of video taped, though.

PVR is Personal Video Recorder. It referes to most iterations of the "record live tv to a hard drive", including TiVo, ReplayTV, and computer hardware solutions such as the ATI AIW series. And yes, recording TV onto your HD through a TV card is definitely doable, but there are some definite benifits to having a stand-alone PVR:

1) interface! The WAF (wife acceptance factor) is very important for many of us :)
2) reliability
3) simplicity. This is VERY important. I tried building my own basic computer-based PVR... it was a pain in the ass to get the right hardware, software that worked, getting updates from the net, getting good quality video using an affordable processor, getting software that works well with the ATI RF remote, getting software that has an integrated EPG (electronic programming guide) that is updated regularly, etc. etc. etc.
4) SIMPLICITY

There are some benifits to having a computer-pvr, though, such as it's easier to upgrade, you can also play DVDs and have the computer control lighting (X10 modules, etc), and you can get a HD tv card and use fancy deinterlacing features.
