I've always been here, though I don't post much during the school year. I miss the RC5 stuff when it was in full steam way back when. :)

Yea, it has changed....some things for the worse, some for the better.

I didn't really like the splitting up of PN and OT, but it is no biggie....and Moonbeam did kind of get out of control sometimes, lol.

Man, I forgot about all those people like Tex and Jerboy....good times indeed.

Well, the number of lame posters (age is not neccessarily the be all end all...I have seen some pretty imature 'older' posters before...) has definitely increased, and like someone else said, the 'angst' threads are getting a little repetitive. Oh well.

Does anyone find it interesting that people are proprietary over the forum in a way that's analogous to the cool\poser divisions that eventually arise in virtually any subculture.

I think that when we become comfortable with an understanding of the social hierarchy of a group we are made uncomfortable when that hierarchy changes. The influx of new users causes ones position within the social framework of the community to be threatened, or at least not as clearly defined.

Or I could be talking out of my ass again... that's certainly possible. ;)

i lurked for a long time before i joined.

splitting off P&N was a great idea, but ATOT still has a growing suckage issue.

I'm telling you people, it all started with the splitting off of P&N.

OT was sh!tty way before P&N came along.

As PC's became more and more inexpensive I think it was inevitable that the demographics are now younger . I miss the cowbell and good, original photochops, not the lame "pwned!!" pics.

Agreed.

Look at some of the people that still post over at P&N and tell me that this place wouldn't be livelier with them here.

The "old days" certainly had a more frontier feel to them. The Internet bubble was in full swing, the Intel/AMD processor wars were just getting started, and 3DFX was nVidia's main competitor.

I remember when the 700 MHz Pentium III was the overclocker's choice (to 933 MHz), when Paulson was one of the first to get a 1 GHz Athlon (remember, the crap one with 1/3 speed L2 that could barely outrun the 900 MHz version), and the routing of Dennilfloss.

This is my fourth incarnation on AnandTech forums. I was never a particularly prolific poster, but it is interesting to see how things have evolved.

And he still has the best damn quote EVER up here! The one about:

Shania Twain is on the short list of women I'd do in front of my wife...and her lawyer.

I dont notice a change since I first signed up. I doubt it was much different before that either.

Yeah it was. Things were much cruder and funnier before the School Marms joined who were followed by the teenage AOL Chatroom Kiddies which dominate this place now. When the School Marms joined it meant the end for members like NoWhereMan and H8tank. When the Kiddies joined we started getting YAGT threads, Shaving your Balls threads and Neffing.

I used to.

But not anymore.

I actually stopped visiting here when the old boards went away in late 1999.....but decided to join up a few months later.

I can't believe how this place has changed from 1998 (when I first joined) and today.

I remember when the number of members was measured in the hundreds and had far fewer members than sites that no longer exist today.

Do you miss the "old" ATOT?

Sort of...

I'm on the fence, the discussions were much livelier in the day, but, being a realist, the only constant is change.

For instance, I was 100% against gay marriage & I started really reading the threads about it & doing a little soul searching, changed my mind. Wouldn't have changed it without seeing opinions posted by the younger members of AT forums.

I'm in my 40's and I think a real danger as one ages is closing yourself off to new ideas & change, every once in a while I see a post that really makes me think, lots of times the post is from a younger (newer) member.

& yes, some of the post are just plain stupid, but a lot of them have merit and a different outlook.

& it bothers me that some members haven't hung around:(
