The local home depot has them and I like using them...although there are always a few people in front of me who can't figure it out

They have them at some of the bigbox grocery stores here... I absolutely hate them.

stupid thing tells me to put the item back down and then to pick it up again, meanwhile there is a line of people behind me waiting as the stupid machine blurts out these dumb instructions 3 times per item!!!!!

never again.

Don't like them.
1) Too picky.
2) Now that they are popular, the regular lines are usually faster where I shop.
3) I like the personal touch.
4) I get to answer relavant questions when working with a cashier. For example: at the grocery store they ask if I found what I wanted, if I say no, the item is in the store next time I come.

I've never had a single problem with a self checkout and I use them all the time.

Maybe I'm just smart. :)

Yup, I use them at any store that has them..

So far the only two stores I've found around here that do are Home Depot and Fred Meyer.

Edit:Read the thread..

LOL! I can't believe so many of you have problems with them. Have you all lost your touch!? This is AnandTech.

Never had a problem.. and yes, they're quicker.

At both of the ones I've tried around here, there's nothing wrong with scanning and tossing. You're supposed to go slow so the watching cashier can see your item, but as someone else said, the platforms are pretty sensitive.. it would be hard to steal anything that way, because it bitches at you if the item weight isn't correct.

And whoever said it is absolutely correct. Most problems are because they don't have the units calibrated correctly for the item in question.

It happens, especially on lower volume items and big stores ....

If they want me to be a checker, they can pay me the $17/hour wage that a checker gets paid. Otherwise, I want a checker to deal with it.

Seriously.. offer 3% off or something like that when you use it..but otherwise, hell no.

yes. i like that a lot. often times i only stopped by to buy five things, and even in the 'under 10 items' aisle some people still have a lot of items to check out. not to mention price check, out of paper, and other problems. self checkout is a godsend for me.

If I only have a couple simple items, and there's noone in line for them I will. Otherwise I go to the checker. If I just got a jar of spaghetti sauce, it's just flip it past, slide a bill in, and grab the change. If I got a full cart then it becomes a pain and I'll just plop it on the belt, same if I have produce.

That about sums it up.

They're not ready for prime time.

LOL. I've never had trouble using a self-checkout machine. Maybe certain users aren't ready for prime time? ;)

Dude, normally I would agree with you, but as damned near a Network Engineer I feel pretty comfortable with technology. Those machines have 2 critical flaws
1) Too slow. I want to scan and toss, not scan.......gently set.......wait.......scan....
2) Too sensitive about the weights of items placed in.

I dunno. I've never used one at Wal-Mart, but I've used them at 5-6 other places, and the only time I ever have an issue is when my fiancee leans or throws her purse on the baggage area. I bet the sensitivity is adjustable and the problem isn't with the technology, it's just that it's not configured properly by the store.

yea, i've used em at homedepot and i think albertsons supermarket at two locations. no probs:p must be calibration. i hope they take over.

its not like you really miss going inside the banks now that we have atms everywhere

all the time.

What cracks me up is when I see long lines at the self checkout and the three express lanes (with cashiers) are wide open.

I save time when I go through this line. That's enough 'saving' for me.

I've never had the opportunity except once at the grocery store. Their system was so retarded it took forever.

Had to scan an item, wait for it to regsiter, then it'd tell me to put it in the bag so it could register the weight or something. Then went on to the next. I used to work at a grocery store and can swipe items over the scanners faster than most people. I was hoping I could just check out liek that but it sucked.

But I'm game to try it again with a better system at some other place.

I think it'd be great at McDonalds or something if you could walk up, punch in your own order on a screen or something and then just wait on the side for them to fill it. But it'd have to be really idiot proof because of some of the people I see in there.

I remember having self-order terminals at a local Taco Bell back in 1995. I thought they were pretty awesome. Unfortunately, I guess not many other customers thought so since it eventually went away and I've never seen them at any other fast food location.

Were do checkers make $17/hour? That's more than I make in IT.

Seriously, I have never heard of a checker making that kind of money.

I love using them. I use them almost all the time when I go grocery shopping. I've never had a problem. I can scan my airmiles card, and my coupons, and produce, and loose rolls. Yet to have a problem.

That's fairly accurate.
And that's not even counting the time when I bought a tiny tube of super glue along with two other items, yet had to wait 5-10 minutes for the cashier to come over and verify that I was, in fact, old enough to buy a ~0.8 oz tube of super glue.

I'd  them more only if idiots like the above knew how to use them properly ;) Then they'd actually be FASTER than using a checker.

I've had mixed experiences with them. The ones at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Meijer were all good. The one at Jewel-Osco sucks sucks sucks.

Basically its not good if you're buying a lot of stuff, or if you're buying anything large. But if you have fewer than around 10 items, and they're all normal-sized, its nice to have. Well, at least until RFID replaces the UPC barcode. ;)
