Looks like even McDonalds is going to self-checkout Kiosks. Where will it go to next?

I like saving time @ Walmart using them...

I love self checkouts. They're great for when you only have a couple of items and don't want to stand in line, which is usually me. I use the ones at Kroger (grocery store) and Home Depot all the time. I just used one at Kroger tonight, since the store is open 24 hours, but there are no cashiers after a certain time.

It's really great to be able to run in at midnight, grab a few things, and scan yourself out.

yup, one emplyee = 4 checkouts at once. thats just good. esp late at night at supermarkets when there would only be one human cashier instead...with a line full of impatient people.

nothing worse then a slow cashier who talks too much or whatever.

Fvck no. Why the hell should I pay the same price so that I can do more work, and the company can lay off half thier workforce?

If they want me to be a checker, they can pay me the $17/hour wage that a checker gets paid. Otherwise, I want a checker to deal with it.

Nope. The damned thing is far too annoying for me to deal with
"Item incorreclty added to bag, please remove item"
Remove item
Scan new item, place in bag
"This item does not match last scanned item. Please place last scanned itme in bag"
Place last scanned item in bag
"Item incorrectly added to bag, please remove item"
*confused*
Ok, I cant add what I scanned, but I cant scan anything else.....
Kick machine, swear loudly
Place item in bag
"Incorrect item in bag. Please ask cashier for help"

They are nice, but unfortunately, though saving money for the company, it doesnt help the economy.

The ones up here at the Giant supermarkets are awesome. I use them exclusively. I haven't had any problems at all except for coupons but that doesn't bug me cause an employee will come and override it for me.

I always have problems with them. Of course I'm old & resistant to change:(

Next big thing is RFID, you'll just pull up next the checkout & everything will get checked out without scanning each item.

Then someone will offer a bracelet/key fob that has a chip in it that allows you to charge your CC without producing it. Like Speedpass...

Next will be an implanted chip for CC charges.

The one at Smith's here was like that, but the last time going through was a breeze. I think they turned the bitchiness dial down a few notches.

LOL. I've never had trouble using a self-checkout machine. Maybe certain users aren't ready for prime time? ;)

The only place I've tried them is at Walmart. And the experience was exactly as described. The attendant told me I was doing everything right, just that the machine was too picky about the anticipated weights of the items placed in the bags.

Something I noticed with the self-checkout machines here in West Lafayette.

The college students have 0 problem with them at all.

Everyone else bitches about how they don't work right.

hrmm . . . .

Dude, normally I would agree with you, but as damned near a Network Engineer I feel pretty comfortable with technology. Those machines have 2 critical flaws
1) Too slow. I want to scan and toss, not scan.......gently set.......wait.......scan....
2) Too sensitive about the weights of items placed in.

They used to be faster if you only had a few items, however at the Kroger here (only place besides Home Depot that has them, and they're never open there) it seems like they're always busier than the actual checkout lanes. The last few times I went I actually made it through the standard checkout line faster than the people waiting to use the self checkouts.

If there's older people using them, I won't even bother, even if the lines are really long.

I dunno. I've never used one at Wal-Mart, but I've used them at 5-6 other places, and the only time I ever have an issue is when my fiancee leans or throws her purse on the baggage area. I bet the sensitivity is adjustable and the problem isn't with the technology, it's just that it's not configured properly by the store.

I've only tried the one at Wal-Mart, and only once. It was such a PITA I gave up on them for a while.

they are my favorite. i hardly have any problems. once my bf had trouble because he was leaning on the place where the bags are even though he insisted that was ok.... only thing i dont like is when people STILL try to put the bags away before the order is completed
