I am of the theory that everyone in the world hates speed bumps except for the contractors that make them for cities. Answer this quick poll. I seriously can't stand getting my car torn up nor having to dodge into oncoming traffic to prevent my back from being shattered by 6-foot tall speed bumps.

They don't bother me. They scare everyone who rides with me though, because I never slow down.

I have two fun stories about speed bumps.

My favorite is driving on a neighborhood street, see a sign stating a speed bump is ahead rated at say 20mph. Funny thing, I could have swore the speed limit sign I just passed said 25mph. Why is the speed bump a lower speed than the speed limit?

The other fun one is that your traditional speed bump is a major problem for fire trucks. Fire trucks have jack for suspension. Thus going over speed bumps is a bit of a hassle.

If they want to slow people down, there are two better ways. One is the rumble strips, those very small speed bumps that make the car shake slightly when going over them. They help remind you about your speed. The other is putting in a chicane (sp?) style turn in the road. I've seen many places where they do this to prevent a long straight section that would otherwise be a speeding zone.

My private high school has a half mile long driveway to the school and they installed speed humps to keep speed low. They are about 10 feet long and maybe 3 feet high... its a real mess, you really cant go over them at over 15mph or your car bottoms out (unless you go at about 45mph+ in a sedan, I usually went over them at 35 in my Landcruiser heh). They built them up even bigger one summer on the first day of school they had traffic jams because Porsches kept getting stuck on the speed hump.

I indured those fvcking humps for 5 years:disgust: Speed bumps are nothing, it is the speed humps that I hate - I think it must be a communist invention, no one in their right mind would ever want one of thse.

It depends on the speedbump. The one's that the City (NYC) has on roads aren't bad since they don't destroy your car if you go over them at 20-30mph. But those small speedbumps that private contractors and parking-lots install are killer. You have to come to a complete stop to go over one of those without having your car jump. Even then its still very hard.

I love them....

Rise above seat, firmly press down on the pegs and soar right above the bump at 40 mph+

If you can't look before crossing or keep your kids in the backyard in your neighborhood, then that's your problem. Well, it should be, but it isn't.

I don't ever slow down for speed bumps(when I used to drive my 86 buick, or in my 98 grand cherokee) so I usually don't care unless someone in front of me slows down to liek 5 mph for one...then it pisses me off

I hate when I'm going too fast and notice a speedbump too late. I went over one of those the other day in my 240sx. I was afraid that I broke my car. The small ones that rise sharply are the worst. You have to slow down to 5mph to go over them without issue. I like the big ones though. There is one in the neighborhood near here, and when you go over them at the speed limit it's a smooth sine motion.

They are more evil than GWB's arch-nemesises.

My company installed about 8 of them in the parking lot in the last several months. If my car requires suspension repairs earlier than typical, the safety nazis getting the frickin' bill.

You need a "I don't give a crap" option :p

I'd rather not have them than have them..they can be really annoying at times. Then again, I don't drive a sports car, and it's *not* riced out with a low body kit (or anything, for that matter), so they're more of an annoyance than anything.

I don't really like them, but I would have done the same thing in my old car. What really scares people is when you're going down a gravel road at about 35 and you swerve towards the ditch and yank on the e-brake :D That is fun unless you go in the ditch!
