I disagree. Look at the most popular Dimension: the 4600. It currently charges $40 to move from a CD to a DVD! I have a Dell that turns 1 year old this month, and it doesn't have a DVD. Sure the top of the line Dimension 8300 doesn't give you a CDROM option, but all the cheaper ones do.

As soon as Dell forces DVDs on ALL its consumers is the time to push game makers to release DVD versions.

I dont think there really is any need for DVD's for games... Unless a game requires more then 750mb from the cd to play the game there really isnt any need... it would only increase publishing costs. Just because a few guys are lazy when it comes to installing a game doesn't make much sense to increase publishing costs. Would you pay more to play games on dvd then on 2 cd's?

Mostly because I don't want to keep paying for CD books. When I reinstall a game I don't want to have to keep hunting them all down.

I don't care if they charge a bit more for it. I'd like the option to buy on DVD, to be "lazy" as you call it. And some games do want you to switch CDs - Diablo 2 did, if you didn't install all movies to your HD. And lets not even get into a game like "The Sims" - I swear, I hate ever playing that game mostly because it takes a half hour of putting in and pulling out CDs to install all the freaking expansions. Give me 1 DVD with it all.

i have a DVD-ROM, but i barely even use it for movies anymore since i got myself a DVD player for my TV.

so you all are talking about using DVDs as a means of storage, games, and such. it never even dawned on me that DVDs could serve as storage for several file types. so the only difference btw DVDs and CDs is storage space, and we can do the same thing with DVDs that we can do w/ CDs?

I have one and a DVD-RW in my rig. My daughter has one in hers also. I got her the Encyclopedia Britannica on a single DVD disk. The CD version had like 5 disks. Too much of a pain.

IMO, this will, in no way, affect the "pushing" of DVDs. It really won't matter of every consumer has a DVD-ROM drive, since DVD-ROM drives still read CDs. If the price of making a CD is cheaper, CDs will continue to be made, regardless of the number of DVD-ROM drives there are. I have a DVD-ROM drive in my primary rig. I needed a black bezel drive, and I bought an OEM drive for $16. I thought that was a deal I couldn't pass up.

dvd rom as of now, soon i'll be getting a writer. when they hit my price/performance point. you're right brittanica is great on one disk. my rom was 35 dollars, it's a lite-on 16x. it's a great reader. and i think that with the oems putting combo drives in pcs it won't be long before they'll be like cd players. i do not watch movies with it i have a changer in the living room fo that with much better sound. didn't cost much either, except the 10 inch powered subwoofer. can you read lease breaker? lololol!

I never really got around to adding a DVD player to my computer, I have always had a stand alone DVD player and never really seen the use. However, I think I might look into a DVD burner in the near future

Combo Drive for me, needed a new CD-RW drive and the Combo was on sale for around the same amount. Not including the fact that our "TV" is smaller than the computer monitor so its a major step up in watching movies (DVD > VHS + 17" Monitor > 13" TV)

I think polling a computer site for such information is perhaps the wrong place to find out what the preponderance of the public has on their machines. I think you'd find that within the general population, over 50% still don't have DVD drives on their computers. However, I guess you can take into consideration the gaming population, which is what the question is in reference to.

It is, however, cost prohibitive to use DVD media to provide games on, because the cost IS higher to mass produce on. Our company has at least 3 games that are multiple CD (3 or more), and we've explored the option, but it's just capital efficient.

Maybe it would be better if they did versions on dvd and versions on cd for those that, for some strange reason, don't have a dvd drive... oh and I have a dvd rom and a dvd-rw drive in mine.

I've got a DVD-ROM, but only because it came in the last system that was purchased for me when I started college. Since that time I've built two computers on my own, and it's just kind of moved from case to case. I watch an occasional movie on it, but for the most part it just acts as a second CD-ROM for me.

I have a DVD-ROM - and beyond CDs this thing barely gets any REAL DVD use. Every once in a while I'll watch a movie on my TV using my tv out but beyond that I barely use it for anything DVD. I too don't think ALL games should be on DVD - but if we have 4-5 CD games good god toss it on a DVD and end it iall!

Besides - this isn't purchasing some 250$ hardware to play some DVD Game - this this picking up a DVD drive for 40$ if you are lazy and don't want to hassle with rebates or even less WITH rebates...

I would love to have Halflife2 come out on DVD just to get more people to get a DVD drive and a headturner to game companies that "yeah - you can stick those multiple discs on a DVD and still get a sale"

Well I will say this again...I think games should start coming out on DVD. If you don't have a DVD-ROM (at least), tough, go buy one. The freakin' things are like $40! I really like it when people bitch about having to buy a DVD-ROM drive to play a game, however, they have spent $300+ on a video card to play the latest games.

That being said, I've had a DVD drive in my PC even since I got my PII400 machine. It was a 4X DVD-ROM drive, but it did it's job. I could not even image building a PC without a DVD-ROM drive. It is just a must for me.
