Poll Do you have a Floppy in your PC Case?

Always. Though I'm thinking about not installing it until I need to flash something... Got me thinking now.

I still have one. Now that I have a USB flash drive, I have only used the floppy for flashing the mobo BIOS and installing SATA drivers on OS install.

I also have a ZIP drive that the USB flash media has pretty much made obsolete as well. That could make another interesting thread. Are people still buying ZIP drives and why?

Yes, but when I transfer it to a new case I will not use a floppy. I'm gonna get a multi-format card reader instead.

Yes, I find them real useful on small file transfers. Cheap, I can hand them out like candy and not care if they are lost. If it's a small file, I don't have to go through all the overhead of cd burning. Since the drives are a dime-a-dozen just dsitting in old comps all over, and the boards and cases have room, I don't see why I wouldn't have one. There are better solutions for larger files, but they work great for 50k excel files.

booting from cdrom is a pain in the assesssssssssssss.s.s.s.ss
It will cause my computer to lag for 30sec everytime I bootup as it seek for bootcd or dvd
and even longer if their is a cd/dvd inside.

In short, floppy drive are as useful as dos. can't do without it.
hey it cheap anyway so why not buy one incase of emergency
BTW, you can't make a bootcd without a floppy drive

I had a broken floppy in my case for about a year before I just upgraded my motherboard/CPU/ram/PSU. When I re-wired my case a couple weeks ago I took it out.

who has a 5.25 inch floppy drive? i sure as hell do. i have so many games on those things. its so fun to just pop 'em in. got a 3.5" too. they are a lot easier to put stuff on than cds.

Yes, I continue to install (and use) a floppy in every system I build.

And FWIW, the FDD in my main system is an HP-badged Sony that was originally pulled from an HP desktop back around 92-93 and it continues to work perfectly, 12+ years later.

Yes I love floppys. Things like ghost, bios flashes, dos, memtest, etc I find extremely conveinat to have on floppy for quick easy access when trouble shooting and overclcoking.

Maybe old habits are hard to change though... If y'all tell me how to do the same with a USB pen drive I'm all over it. if it's faster..boots to DOS off it, contain all my utilites, and boot into memtest too.

When I ordered my previous PC (that was PII) without floppy drive, shopkeeper looked at me with awe. My current P4 doesn't have one too. Actually, I dumped all the 3.25" floppies I had to trash.

(And I had a very hard time when one of the NIC driver came in floppy. Interestingly, none of the PC in my office has floppy drive given I work in a software company).

Edited : Of course one or two do have broken ones.
