i find the Flintstones theme song offensive because it contains the word "gay" , as in "we'll have a gay old time"

it makes me think the flintstones are closet homosexuals looking to recruit kids that watch the cartoon to the gay lifestyle

😉

LOL reminds of that iPods post in Hot Deals where someone called a CrapUSA manager a 'mook' and someone got all offended saying how there's so many users at AT that hate Asians!!!

What if some blacks find word "Niggardly" to be offensive just because of first six letters in that word?

Does that then become an offensive word just because group of people feel that it is offensive to them?

I honestly don't remember ever using that word.

It doesn't even have the six letters, it's NIGGARDLY.

They sound similar, that is the ONLY relation.

Exactly. Admitting that you find this word offensive is tantamount to admitting that you are an idiot.

LOL. I don't want to hold people back from stating their opinion, but yes, the two words have nothing to do with each other. If it was so offensive, why would my black English teacher teach us the word?

2 reasons:

1: To help you expand your vocab.
2: For the slight chance of offending an idiot, and making it an interesting day.

how can a word be offensive, it's the way the word is used that would be offensive.

Isn't it all about context for almost every word?

The word in itself is not offensive. But if someone used it as way to imply the word n1gger it would be taken as offensive. The word like other words in itself are not bad, but are so close to words that are offensive, it is better to use others words to get your point across instead.

It's just a word which sounds like another word which is considered to be offensive because of the context it was originally used in. Phew.

I dunno. I understand that words are powerful (especially those with negative connotations), but it seems more empowering to be able to ignore a word or work hard to take back a word which is hurtful. Otherwise, the people who use negative words to enrage will win... but that's a separate topic from this thread 🙂

I've read all of his books, and Rainbow Six is just the tip of the iceberg for that word. Its not offensive, it has an actual meaning, but in todays world anyone who puts the letters N I G G together in a word and publishes it, gets stomped on by every "politically correct" idiot out there who thinks their "doing their part" to rid our nation of racism.

By the way, am I wrong or is this like the 400th thread about this stupid word? Do a search before posting this regurgitated garbage ffs.

It doesn't bother me and it actually seems quite useful...

Main Entry: nig·gard·ly
Pronunciation: -lE
Function: adjective
Date: 1571
1 : grudgingly mean about spending or granting : BEGRUDGING
2 : provided in meanly limited supply
Great book. 🙂

That word doesn't bother me one bit. It isn't even spelled the same as 'the n-word' + dly - it's an 'a' instead of an 'e' so there isn't even any conspiracy theory root word subliminal meaning sh!t. 🙂

Actually, it's tantamount to having a neon sign mounted on top of your house that spells out "AN IDIOT LIVES HERE!!" in 10-foot-high letters and then going downtown to hand out maps so people don't have trouble finding your house.

So does that mean i could get you to take offense if I started calling you a "b"

You stupid b, eat b and b. :|

Pretty offesive, huh?

I'm not offended by it b/c I know what it means (its used extensively in To Kill a Mockingbird, 9th grade reading where I'm from), but I also have the common sense to know OTHERS may be offended by it, so I choose a different word to express the same meaning. There's a lot of antiquated words and terms coined and defined in gentler times. Words change meaning over time. Time changes the meaning of words.
