I have been reading Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy.
He uses it several times and I always laugh.
It doesn't bother me and it actually seems quite useful...

No, because it is not an offensive word. It's usually thought of in that context because the listener doesn't have a clue of what it means, only assumes it has to do something with race.

Of course not. That's like being offended by someone's Shitzu dog or a vase of pussywillows by the front door. The origins of this word far predate the "N Word" as a racial epithet.

Wow, ANOTHER discussion of this word? I'm bored already.

I'm not offended by it, but people who use it BECAUSE it sounds like certain epithets are jerkoffs.

The sad thing is when you dig through Google and find actual news stories where people were forced to apologize for using the word. What are we becoming as a society when it becomes "offensive" to use a legitimate word with legitimate meaning, that sounds something like a racial slur? Pathetic, I call it..

If Niglet is an offensive word, then Niggardly is too.

Then why is 'tar baby' a socially acceptable word?

:Q SAY WHAT?!?!! :disgust:
NO way you would call anyone that!
Would you?

It has a clear, distinct meaning, & has absolutely no racial connotations.

I have no problem whatsoever with it.

NO...

Also, in order for it to be offensive...someone has to find it offensive...

fact is, some people are offended by it... most... aren't.

What makes a word offensive? by the number of people who find it offensive? or by what it is defined? hmmmm....
