Poll: Do you ever register your shareware?

Does anyone ever register WinZip or WinRar? What do u get for registering besides maybe a clear conscience? I personally have never ever registered a single piece of shareware.

How do the companies stay in business if no one ever pays them for their software?

nope, i havent yet anyway. I also dont have any on this computer at this time anyway, oh wait, yea i do nevermind 🙂

my old company registered winzip.. they were strictly by the books with all pc software... altho.. the what.. 10 or 20 bucks to register winzip is NOTHING compared to autocad 14... especially when you zip 100,000 dollar files.. ? 😛

I registered the only shareware I use - PowerArchiver. It was only $7 so I thought it was worth it 🙂 I tend to avoid shareware in general.

I was going to register winzip, but I found the new version of WinRAR to be as good, and do much, much more.

WinRAR is now my backup software, for backing up data onto CD-RW - powerful exclusion and inclusion lists, much better compression, support for file security and streams, recovery records, world class encryption, archive attribute support, etc.

The companies stay in business, because people (often businesses or institutional users) do register software. For this reason, I do pay for quality software that I want to see improved, and I use regularly.

Yes. TVTool, WinZip, Ultraedit-32 and PopUpCop.

All software that I thought are great value for what they cost and there was no proper freeware alternative.

Many of the shareware companies are basically just guy one doing everything. Like TVTool, one guy doing it all for basically nothing. Registration is around ?10 I believe which is basically free when you consider how big help TVTool is.

And the best support I have ever gotten I got from the Ultraedit team.

I've contemplated it, but after using a given program nag-free for a while courtesy of astalavista, you tend to wonder why you should pay for something you already have.
Horrible, horrible mindset to have but it's true.
I do register programs I use for work though. The corporation pays for those. 😛

If it's worth it, yes it gets registered with my Yahoo SPAM account.

If I can't live without it, I'll even pay for it 😀

Being a Ham Radio op I use a bunch of shareware and every single piece on this machine is registered.
Not only because it's the right thing to do if you intend to keep using the software but, it encourages the author to keep writing and updating the software.

I registered Opera a month or so ago. Its so much nicer w/o the annoying banner. Other then that I've been thinking of "donating" to the makers of Trillian since I like it so much.
