So, what about *OUR* Supreme Court deciding to be more concerned with international law than the interpretation and constitutionality of our own laws? Justice O'Conner recently announced they're going to be making more decisions based on international law...

THAT'S JUST WRONG!

what has that to do with the topic

Because it shows that our government actually does care what the international community's opinion of the US is? Just a hunch...

government != supreme court

The Supreme Court of the United States is not the highest level of the Legislative branch of our government?

separation of powers

the views of the Supreme court are not necessarily the views of the govt. and their views can be conflicting

when the surpeme court made that comment about being more concerned about international law, Cheney, Rumsfeld
and Wolfowits probably had a heart attack :p

that's what I meant with supreme court != govt.

can we return to the topic now

edit: dang Ynog beat me to it
:p

Not sure if the comment about the Supreme Court and Legislative branch was sarcasm, but just to clarify,

the Supreme Court is the highest level of the Judicial Branch, not Legislative branch, thats Congress.

True.

I agree with this.

I could give a rats ass what the hell Europe thinks of the US & our attitudes, cultural norms, etc.

thats pretty much the standard moronic American response....
I presume you're bringing this up b/c of the whole Janet bewbie situation...dont you think the Europeans have a point? Why does America get so worked up about it? Don't you think there is a serious flaw in American culture if one boob throws everyone into fits? Think about it.
I agree with this also.
And ive gotta admit, that JanetJ thing, what a laugh. No-one would bat an eyelid here in europe. The worst that`d happen, is the british tabloids would have a field day.

California is to the U.S. as France is to Europe. Everyone else in the nation looks on with disgust and shame, but can't look away due to the entertainment value.

The America's is North and South America.
The US is the United States (of America).
Canada is in North America.

America is too much of a generalisation to me, I believe it encompasses Canadians and US citizens.

Canada, IMHO, is fine. The US, OTOH, I am not so fond of.

I don't think much of US attitudes, or at least what is mostly shown of them (guns, war, God (I have a personal thing against "God" as a concept, god is fine though - I blame my upbringing when I was young), general stupidity - eg: Bush).
Some things from the US I do like (C.S.I, Law and Order, TV shows & films mainly), but not attitudes and ideas/ideals.

Don't hate the messenger; regardless of their past they're still right about a lot of things - such as this JJ fiasco. It's pathetic.

Europe as a whole still believes that it's opinions will actually mean something (of course that's a horrible generalization). Here's some news for France, Germany etc. You're not in charge anymore! Get with the program! Napoleon lost. The world where they were superpowers is not around any longer. That's why they need the UN and that's why they had to form the EU. So that it's opinions might actually make a difference. I for one, don't give a flying fvck what Europe thinks. Look where their thinking got them in the past.

i don't really care what they think necessarily, but i think they tend to be more advanced in terms of morals.

I guess I have to turn my collar up, my red neck is showing...

I've always felt a certain loyalty to why my grandparents imigrated here, and tended to discount anything to do with Europe.

Ex wife with fake British accent & her husband with a real British accent don't help matters any either.

well no i don't care what Europeans think of Americans. Because it don't make a difference one way or another on what I do every day. I have no control over what the Government does.

I doubt that the average European cares what the US thinks of them. Again it does not make a Difference one way or another.

If i were to meet a European on vacation i would be nice and respectful but that is just common courtesy. Same as if i was visiting Europe (plan to some day. Visit WWII sites and Germany to visit family) i would still use common courtesy (wish everyone did bah).

IF i had some say in what the government actually did i would care about world opinion. because then i could do something to change it. Right now i have no way. Not to mention i have other things to worry about then what France or such thinks of the US.

But i can understand why some hate the US government. I disagree with some of what they do. such as bulling other country's to do what they want. While i do think the government lied about WMD in Iraq i still feel that Saddam needed to be taken out (not for US safety mind you. he was just a cruel dictator that needed to be killed).

Maybe some attitudes will change if/when bush is out of office (heck i even voted for the guy and regret it).

I really don't care what they think at this point - because it doesn't affect me in my everyday life.

What Europeans thinks about americans (own experiences WOHO!)

* They are dumb
* They are trying to sue everything
* They can't point out their own country on the map (WOHO2 - I have a link for this)
* They drink 1 litre Coke for dinner
* They are all fat and are watching TV 5h / day

Of course, those are the worst prejudices. But if you hasn't heard it before maybe it can be fun to read, I dunno. And I agree with "freegeeks". .. And I don't care what US people thinks about us.

I think they have some valid opinions, but I think they need to keep in mind that if it weren't for us, they'd most likely all be speaking German or Russian by now.

It may sound self-centered, but its the truth. We didn't steal their superpower status from them, they gave it to us on a silver platter when they decided treaties were more important than common sense, and started the first World War.
