POLL!!! do you care about how much noise your computer makes?

I'm not a Silence Freak, but I definitely value a quiet computer. I got a Seagate 'Cuda IV HDD over a Maxtor or WDD 8MB HDD specifically because they're more quiet. I'm using the stock (and silent) Intel HSF despite an 800MHz OC and a Antec TruePower PSU with temp-controlled fans and my case fans attached to the temp-controlled fan headers on the PSU. If my monitor were off, I'd have to check the power LED to see if my computer were on 😎

80cm????? dude, thats like 2 and a half feet...I know you prolly meant mm, whatever.

Anyways, I have a ThermalTake P4 Dragon 6000rpm CPU fan that sounds like a goddam turbine. Good thing its adjustable and I have it running at 3400rpm....very, very quiet. My PC makes a nice, enjoyable hummm. Altogether I have 7 fans running and its perfect volume. Oh yea...I do care about noise.

No, I mean 80 CM - yeah it is huge (custom case- someday i should get pics uploaded of it...) but I'm very worried about heat and this way I can get 35 full load and 27 idle.

Besides, my Audigy @ Audigy2 is VERY hot

I like the quiteness of my P4....I have 80mm fans with low speed rpm and whisper enermax power supply with adjustable speed fans and I place my computer in a compartment in my desk and it deadens the noise well...Even with low speed fans and tight compartment my p4 stays below 40c at idle and loads just at 52c....

Damn...surprised that badboy doesn't suck the mobo right off its mounts.....and haha about the Audigy's....

I didn't care very much until I recently built a home linux server and decided to try to make it as silent as possible. I would say it's a lot quieter than my primary system (which isn't exactly loud). Definitly a big difference which I appreciate now that I can tell the difference.

My buddie's box has 4 120mm fans, including 2 sucking in the bootom, 2 blowing out the top, I swear if the case was lighter it could fly. It already sounds like a helicopter, why not function as one?

i do care(you'll understand after living with a Delta 60mm screamer for over a year)
it enables me to run F@H 24/7 without my parents noticing that the computer is on😉
but don't have the budget now though🙁

I'm extremely sensitive to noise.

My current workstation (I have a different computer I game with, but this is just my "work" box):
P2-400 (fanless)
Geforce2 MX (fanless)
Intel 440BX MB (fanless)
512 Megs of ram
Seagate Cuda IV (nice and quiet)
Seasonic 300 Watt PS (very quiet PS)

...all in all, there's ONE fan in the computer, in the PS - which runs at about 5V since the seasonic only ramps up when the temperature raises.

let's put it this way - I can hear the coils in my monitor buzzing when I turn it on, and it drives me nuts.

SPCR.com = silent computing.

I care! Right down to the optical drives!:Q

I heard Samsung and LG produces the quietest ODDs unlike those jet-taking-off-I'm-just-trying-to-watch-a-movie drives LiteOn makes

Like others here, I've spent more money that I intended to just to keep my rig quiet. panaflos everywhere, fanless heatpipe for the vid card, replacing loud harddrives. i'd go to watercooling if it wasnt so expensive

i use all stealth vantec fans in my case, and its also stuffed and lined with 1" thick accoustic foam🙂

so yes.. i care.

in general .. NO ... (i have all kinds of 80mm fans, a High Volume 140CFM 120mm fan, a bunch of 7200 RPM drives .. a couple 10K RPM drives ... etc ... and it doesnt bother me too much ...)

however ...there is a limit ... I have a 38CFM delta fan that i used to use on one of my boxes ... and the high pitched whine was too much ...

Mine doesn't bother me too much. I'm usually playing some loud heavy metal, so I don't hear the computer anyway. But I can't get to sleep too easily when it's on.

My 7200 rpm TT Volcano 7+ makes alot of noise but because the noise is constant your brain tunes it out and it doesn't bother you anymore. Just like when I lived 30 feet from train tracks. For the 1st 2 weeks I couldn't sleep very well but after awhile I couldn't sleep without the train going by!🙂

Im not ultra sensitive like some people, but I don't want it to sound like a damn vacum cleaner either.

My current setup is pretty good, Alpha 8045 with a Papst 80 mm fan making ~25db, and a bunch of other fans, all in all it's definately noticeable if there's nothing else making noise in the room, but it quickly drowns out if I play some music or something.

Had a Globalwin CAK38 before, completely unbearable.

I think that there is an acceptable level of noise for the amount of performance you get, but you can get carried away. I don't like the very high CFM fans, and I don't use any. I prefer to run a better heatsink and more low CFM fans, than to run a few big, fast super loud fans. I bought a Delta high speed once, and it sounded like a real vacuum cleaner. It was so loud, my wife and I couldn't carry on a conversation while we were within 15 feet of it. That was too much. I have come to appreciate quiet fans. My p4 runs a 28CFM fan, and 21CFM case fans, and it stays quite cool. My AMD rig is a bit louder, with a Swiftech and a 30CFM fan, but it runs a lot hotter, so it needs more cooling. I compensate by placing that machine inside a desk enclosure, to kill the noise a bit. Still, you have to find what your threshold is, and stay below it. Otherwise, you risk losing your sanity, and your hearing.

sound most definitely does matter, and to that end, i bought all panaflo fans for my antec 1030 and my alpha pal8045. its barely noticable when the room is quiet, and if there is any noise in the room, then you cant hear it at all.

Quiet? whats quiet? 3 hard drives and 6 case fans keeps my machine sounding like an air conditioner...i pretty much tune it out though so i'd say it doesnt bother me how much noise it makes...unless i hear noises that i shouldn't, of course.

ambiguous question, could be read as asking if you care about noise level in general, or asking wether the noise being made by your current setup is bothering you.

im guessing the former though, so voted yes. I imagine 99% of this board would probably find it bothers them when faced with a comp of 6 delta case fans, delta screamer cpu fan, GFFX, some natty PSU and four whiny HDD's, all cooped up in some cheap case that rattles.

Isnt constantly leaving "my pc on all night running p95 just to make sure no errors ever occur" a bit er backwards, since youd be constantly thrashing your cpu? 😱

I really like being able to turn it up and down (a.k.a. fanbus). I like to turn my fans up at night because the humming is soothing and puts me to sleep. Note: this does not work with high-pitched, whiny fans, only with lower-pitched fans.
