Poll: Do you belive in this statement?

a degree is more valuable to employers
now you having either one of those does not mean you have the ability to get the job done
i have seen so many college grads and certs that do not know sh!t
you'd be amazed

LOL there are tons of people with certifications that have no damn clue what they are doing. On top of that, they aren't very good at learning how to do things.

I have also met plenty of people with degrees that aren't good at learning new concepts.

If it was all based on Degrees and certs, there'd be no need for interviews.

Actually, it highly depends on the job. In a technical job, they will first look at experience, then they will check for certs, then degrees. This is because you could have gotten a PHD in computers in 1960, but that doesn't mean you will be a good candidate. Certs show that you have up to date knowledge. It's a gamble any way you look at it for an employer.

Honestly, I think it depends on the position.

Someone applying to be a tech at a consulting company may find that certs are more important.
Likewise, someone looking at an analyst position will probably find that a degree is more important.

Overall though, I think that a degree makes you marketable to a wider selection of jobs.

When I interview canidates, all i care as far as education goes is the degree, in fact i am very wary of developers who have certs in addition to a degree, which usually means they are trying to compensate for a lack of skills. If you do not have a degree your resume goes in the trash.

honestly, if it were me i would take it off my resume. and only leave the work experience.

I have a bunch of certs , I keep them filed away for safe keeping. I think the chances of my next employer having the same needs is very slim, and I'll have to get new certs regardless.

I think certs do serve a purpose though, and that is to show that you have stayed current with technology or current within your field of work. If I was in a hiring position, I think I would interview the person that had current certs and a degree over a person that only had a degree.
