In terms of cost and lives saved, would it be more or less effective than a 45 mph national speed limit?

I would be pissed as hell if I saw this sort of thing around campus next year. it's not going to stop a psycho from walking through it with a bag full of guns, but it'll go off every time I walk through to go to class/eat lunch/my room/back to class/then to lab/back to eat/my room. I'd have to take my shoes off, empty my pockets, etc 6 or 7 times a day and I'd be absolutely no safer for it.

lowering the speed limit that low will cause more accidents (on a national/macro scale). unintended consequence #1: people take detours on smaller roads to cut, cause more accidents. #2: people take local and speed, cause more accidents. #3: people generally get pissed off, increases road rage.

unless they have armed guards at every entry point, how is it going to be effective? heck watch the matrix, Neo and Trinity completely fvcked up those security guards.

Yea man

What we need is a centralized security point, a main gate if you will, with armed guards and road blocks. Near this will be public parking and past the gates/metal detectors/security will be a bus oval for students to bus into the campus.

Surrounding the entire campus we'll need 6 foot fences with razor wire and guard towers every so often along the perimeter with assault rifles.

No, that won't prevent anything. Ban math and science and replace them with human understanding classes, and kids won't get stressed out and kill each other.

And this will stop heat packing idiots with guns how? Have you seen an Airport security checkpoint? Now imagine if you had a gun and wanted to get past it. I think you'd just shoot the guard and walk through.

THe issue with the VT incident as with (possibly) any other incidents is an individual that has problems dealing with society or society has not treated the individual well (in the mind of that individual).

it would be a lot of trouble for a dead security guard.

whip out the gun from your bag..bam the guards down, continue onto your spree. first two guards are dead in a second, the 3rd might get a shot back before taking a hit. of course you would need 3+ guards and a metal detector at every entrance. thats massive staffing. metal detectors only work on people not into a one way trip.

If you are going to considert the cost of a 45mph speed limit, you have to factor in the amnount of time lost traveling around at that speed, as opposed to higher speeds. Cost isn't only in lives lost.
