Poll: Do people as a whole care about freedom?

Its going to be difficult to keep this from becoming a political thread - good luck with that.

I think most people pay lip service to their appreciation for freedom, but in practice I think people don't really give a crap. The evidence to back this up is that our freedoms are continually and gradually being eroded by massive intrusive government practices and laws. If people really cared, they would educate themselves about what freedom really is, then they would do more to protect it. As it is, governments grow larger every year, which by necessity and definition causes freedoms to shrink while the people stand idly by with their thumbs where the sun doesn't shine. The extreme popularity of socialism and liberalism in the world today indicates that freedom is on the run.

Depends on location. People that have experience freedom want more of it, and will fight tooth and nail to keep it. People that have never tasted it don't know better, and will usually settle for being left alone to live their lives, with a few rules they're forced to follow.
Take your average Chinese. They've lived now for almost 60 years under communist rule. Some young people that have been allowed to see that there's better ways to rule will push for democracy & freedom. But for the most part, the average "joe" in China is willing to put up with the communists, as long as they're able to feed & clothe their family, and put a roof over their head. They'd take freedom if it were handed to them, but won't actively seek it, because that would cause their settled lives to become unsettled.
Much the same that the soviet people were under communism. It wasn't until they tasted freedom that they wanted more, and weren't willing to put up with the repression they'd had for over 70 years.

So put me down for a definite MAYBE.

Freedom is a buzz word. You could turn this country into a military state as long as people still had McDonalds and Walmart.

you cant answer this question 'as a whole'. too many ifs. if you're worried about where your next meal is coming from, you dont care about freedom. if you've never experienced it before, you're less likely to care. if food isnt a problem, you have money and time to spend, then chances are yeah, you're going to care.

but seeing how most people in the world are really poor, i'd say freedom isnt a big issue in most of their minds.

Real Freedom comes at a very high price, and once you lose it it is really hard to get back.

As the saying goes (especially for those who don't vote) "If you aren't part of the solution, then you are part of the problem".

So when we slowly start losing our freedoms and we our widdled down to a non-existent free country because people chose to "whine" and "complain" but do nothing... they have only themselves to blame then for the loss of their rights and freedoms.

By "care" do you mean: it is of importance?

Freedom: do you mean being able to make choices that benefit the choser?

Yes, I think most people "care" about freedom.

Yes of course they care.

the problem is it's being taken away too slowly for the poorly educated average person to notice.

Freedom is not 'only one way to get those two' is it the ONLY way to get those two. People might have told you otherwise, but they were lying to you. With out freedom you can not be secure, because you have no rights. With out freedom you can not be happy, because you have no choice.

When "freedom" means that other people have the right to do and say things that offend you, I would guess that most people don't care about freedom.

Yes, in the sense that they generally want to be left alone, i.e. not negatively effected by governing authorities.
