Both.

Get an inexpensive reliable/durable laptop with 256MB RAM, wi-fi and >10GB HD.

Then depending on how much you game or do intensive work, get a powerful desktop or an average one.

Agreed. iBook for Notes/ect and XP3000 desktop............ My setup at least.

How's the wireless access on campus? Where I got they've really been expanding it in the past few years, it's all over the libraries and a few of the main cafs.

all of us don't have a fortune to spend on computers...

dont get the laptop, you'll highly regret it. I got a laptop my fresh year and pawned it off on a family member ASAP once I found i didnt use the portability at all and the desktop would allow for more file storage, power, and multitasking.

Oh come on, its not a fortune. spend 700 on laptop and 600-800 on desktop. I don't think that is a fortune.

laptop = dead weight you use way less then u'd think. its not like whipping out a pda.. you'll only whip it out under perfect conditions, sitting down, and near power ... batteries run out...even then its a pain...

In a college dorm environment, laptops are not very secure. When I lived in a dorm, I had a desktop, but once I got an apartment with friends I switched to a notebook.

Don't count on a notebook being very helpful in a college class - IMO they are too limited in that you can't easily draw diagrams in your notes.

Law school seems a bit different - lectures go quickly and its often the case that seemingly unimportant points are important, and it is therefore wise to simply write everything down and figure out what is important later. In this environment a notebook can help as typing is far faster than handwriting.

I'd rather have the desktop... I do not like using a laptop, I am much more comfortable with a desktop, and they're easier to upgrade/fix

I'm gonna get a laptop next, just so much more convenient to have around school. I've got a desktop now, and it sucks to have to go home or to the lab to do some data fits when I've found a comfortable couch on campus with a good "view" 😉

don't know if you made your decision or not, but don't buy a laptop unless its a super light.. because if its not that you wouldn't want to carry it on campus along with the rest of your books...

safe bet is to stay with a desktop and if you need to use a computer on campus, get to know where all the labs and/or email stations are

i originally had a laptop for college... but it never left the room. so when it broke and i didnt wanna pay to fix it... i bought a new desktop.

didnt have any problems leaving my laptop in my room - but maybe i was too trusting
